Bose question, weird problem, diagnosis?

Okay. so I have a bose system, recently purchased a new antenna mast hoping to get things working again (recently was clipped) so anyways. I installed it. and the same problem I have is still affected. the stereo will show the "fm" and "static" leds, but will not show a station channel at all. it has in the past. but it will go on and off. brand new antenna mast installed so it's either the power antenna housing or the radio itself. I'm getting really sick of bose and I'm wondering what I should switch to. if I get an aftermaket someone will steal it more then likely.

Any ideas?

It sounds like your BOSE headunit is dying. The best bet would be to install an aftermarket stereo and four new speakers. It will sound better than the BOSE and isn't that expensive. Anything with a Mosfet amplifier will be better than 16 year old technology anyway. If you're worried about someone stealing it, you could always just put the face plate locked in your glove and that should deter them from coming in the vehicle at all.

I am going to have to agree that replacing the Bose is a good option. If you HU is shot, odds are the speakers and/or amps are on their way out, too.

If you are really cheap or poor, you could probably find a usable HU from a junkyard/ebay/CL.

I replaced everything in mine. I did leave the Bose speaker covers, so it looks like I only have an aftermarket HU, even though all of my speakers are aftermarket and I have an amp and sub in the trunk.

Sucks about the past theft. You can get an Eclipse HU. Stereo theives know that they are worthless once stolen. However, crack heads don't know the difference and steal them, anyway.

or just a HU that is cassette only, or so old that it looks like crap and they leave it alone

I'd go for a cheap sony, not worth much if stolen (they'd probably make significantly more stealing your cat) but still decent. Maximas aren't the highest profile of vehicle so unless you've got all sorts of crazy exterior mods or your tint looks like you are hiding something you probably won't encounter that many problems. My friend drove a 90 Mustang GT convertible with a black top and he also tended to take alot of girls out, especially the kind that had boyfriends and yeah his stereo got stolen twice, his car got keyed, etc. I've never had a problem, the one time I thought my car got keyed it was my girlfriend's belt that keyed my car, one more excuse to paint it and say no touching to my GF.
