The speed sensor generally either works or it doesn't. If it stops then you not only lose your speedo but your odometer. Intermittent speedo problems (i.e. speedo reads wrong speeds, or is at zero although the odometer still ticks over) are generally related to the speedo unit itself. The PCB goes bad (Dry / partial solder joints) causing problems with the drive circuit for the speedo dial.

There are two sensors on the automatic trans that detect speed. Brent gave you a great rendition of the speed sensor - speed of the vehicle. You asked about the revolution sensor. The revolution sensor is the second sensor on the auto trans that detects speed - that of the internal trans gear train. This signal goes to the A/T control unit and is used in computing shift points along with the throttle position sensor, fluid temperature sensor, A/T mode switch, and the vehicle speed sensor, and some signals that come from the engine control unit.
