TACH Erratic

Anyone got any idea what would cause my tach to peg out and bounce around whenever it wants? Had stealership check it out (96.00) and they told me it was the gauge or the sending unit ( well hell I told you that when I came in ) No help on this yet. Could it be bad wires ?

Alternator going out??

I had a car (not a maxima or even a Nissan) with an alternator that was on its last leg and the symptoms included an erratic tach.

Beats out staring at a black dash because the display's power converter failed

Happens once every 100k miles and can be fixed in 30 minutes if ya know what you're looking for. It's usually the main PCB that is to blame opposed to the power supply/control unit. I've fixed a mine and a few for other people in the past couple years, none of them have failed since. At least mine hasn't, but I doubt the others have either, I told the owners to contact me if they had problems. Good idea to have spares anyway. I've got a spare with 47k miles on it just in case there's a fatal failure. The one in my car has frickin 200k miles and is still bright as a ****.

I was refering to digi-dashes in general. in almost every case I prefer analog gauges (only exclusion being s-10)
