power steering hose leaking

so i just had my 91 max oil changed and the guy at the shop said that oil was leaking from the power steering hose "moderately" (not sure if thats the only problem there though)..so i asked for a quote and he gave me a $350 quotation of part, labor etc. one thing i know this is a rip off so i opted to get some 2nd opinion from you guys.

also, i talked to one of my buddies and he said just get the parts and hell do it for a mere 120 labor. question is, any1 know any1 website i can look at for replacement or any ideas on the problem cause im having this feeling there could be more than just the hose. thanks guys!

I think that's a good price, although he probably won't replace all the system parts. For all the parts alone I have priced out $235.73, I'm going to do it myself....but I can't imagine a mechanic billing less than 2 hrs for the PWR Steering pump replacement with the hoses. The rack may even have to be bled - i'm not 100% sure.

anyhow, to the OP try tightening the hose fittings at the ends sometimes the brass washers start to weep for some reason mostly because of age and things rattling loose.

New hose & installation - $350
Several layers of duct tape around the leaking area tightened with a hose clamp - $5

Did that two years ago when my hose started leaking out fluid. There's too much pressure for duct tape alone to seal the leak but with a tightened hose clamp on top it'll stop the leak for good.

$350 is too high to just replace the hose.

A pressure hose and labor cost me about $140 a year ago.

Hey, jack the car up and find the source of the leak! Could be one of your brass/aluminum crush washers(2ea) that are at each fitting, or a bad or loose hose, you'll never know if you don't look at it yourself! Check with NAPA thier replacement hoses are good and not quite expensive!

lol wow ok from personal experiance... the only way to get rid of that leak is to get a new hose... i got a new power steering hose that went from the Rack to the pump from NAPA for like 40 bucks....very easy and cheap fix.....i tried the whole tape and hose clamp thing.... its a high pressure hose clamps and tape WILL NOT WORK!
