How do you tell if the VE problem is fixed or not?

I'm searching for a used 92-94 SE 5spd (a one-in-a-million car), and I remeber reading somewhere that the VE engine had a serious flaw and was $1000+ to fix. Since I don't have a VE, I just blew it off. Anyways, I'm not asking for how to fix it, what I'm asking for is how to tell if it's been fixed or not. I'm looking for a max with no more than 120k miles on it, so would it have been fixed by then? If it hasn't been fixed by then, should I turn the car down (if I find one without the VE fixed), or should I get it and have it fixed because the cars gonna be so hard to find again?

And before you guys start jumpin all over me, I DID use the search function and I came up with nothing regarding the question I'm asking.

I guess you're talking about the VTC problem in the VE's. Crank the engine up when it's completely cold and listen (with the hood up) for a "tick, tick, tick, tick, tick". If it's ticking, more than likely, the VTC's are bad.

I don't know a way to see if they have been fixed in the car's lifetime. Try your best to look at service records.

How much do the VTC's cost, cause if it's not to hard, I may be able to bring the problem in (if I encounter it) to the auto tech teacher and have him do it.

I believe new VTC's cost about $400 each. You need two of them, more then likely. Look at the FAQ's and it will answer a lot of the questions about VTC's.

I currently have a VTC problem, and I am not going to trust it to anyone that is not Nissan Certified. First of all, you need a 2 ton press to remove the sprockets from the cams, and if you have that, then you'd better make sure that you get the service bulletin to make sure the install is correct. Because if its not installed correctly, the ticking can come back and your money and time will be for nothing. In other words, this is not a do-it-yourself project.

I was quoted a price of $500 per VTC (there are two) and $1000 for labor from a dealership around me.
