I don't Know How You Guys Removed that RH VG Drive Axle
I tried and tried FOREVER to get it out with a chisel - trying to separate it from that bracket thing. Penetrant - everything. I ran out of Acetylene.
Did you guys have some trick to get this out? In the end I cut the axle out tonight, I cut it once close to the the tranny so when I lift the engine out it will clear, and i'll probably cut the other side off near the knuckle tommorow, although it may clear it if I angle it down and lift engine out.

the carrier bearing...half is mounted to the car...the other is part of the axle.
loosen the 3 10mm (i think 10mm) bolts.
take a hammer and hit the part of the carrier that's part of the axle. don't hit it to separate it...just hit it hard enough so it'll spin/turns. hammer it at one of the ears where the bolt goes through it. once you got it to spin it will walk it's way out. then use a pry bar and pry it out.
there should be absolutely no reason why you needed to cut the axle.

new meaning to "unibody" eh?mine took me an unenviable 2 hours to get out the first time i tried (feb 2008, 5spd swap). basically i took a screwdriver and a bfh and hammered on one of the ears to rotate it about 15 degrees, until the ear was sticking out far enough to re-orient the screwdriver in such a way as to hammer it from the centerline of the car outward... after HUNDREDS of hammersmacks, the sumbitsch finally came out...
The other way you can do it (if you have a VLSD tranny) is to remove the driver side axle and use a long metal punch.. shove it through the tranny and whack the passenger axle out with a BFH and the punch. Just make sure you use a brass punch to keep from deforming the end of the axle or potentially shattering a tool steel punch and sending the fragments into the tranny.

The axle, I cut it right through the middle. And i'm cutting the other side right through the middle near the knuckle so when I lift the engine out it doesn't smack the side. Then i'll deal with getting it out once it's out of the car, and maybe I can smack it in a vice or something.

I cut it wherever there was clearance for the tool and where the tranny can drop down on the tranny jack. Then i'm cutting the other side tonight so it doesn't smack into the side when I remove the engine from the top.
In 1993-VG30E-GXE's defense, I swear it once took me over a day to finally get the passenger side axle out of the carrier bearing on my originally-from-Pennsylvania-VE. It was all pretty much rusted into one solid piece. It didn't help that I was chiseling on it for hours on what I thought was the "seam" and it turned out not to be the seam. Of course, I couldn't tell that from all the rust

Actually James, do you have any tips on how I can get it separated once the engine is out and on a stand? I don't want to end up buying that bracket - i'm scared to find out how much it is.

it's the other people on the road when your car blows all the struts thru the mounts, and swerves into oncoming traffic (or wherever, it will be completely out of control for at least three seconds, more if you can't regain control).

Maybe you should come on up to Canada and protest on the corner of the highway about the ills of rust and how any car that has rust should be destroyed, because all those unsuspecting families will be killed because of a strut mount that you suspect is rusty.

as to the OP's Q. about hockey; no. I have never played. Americans (for the most part) have enough brains not to actively participate in sports that cause brain damage (+ broken bones, +missing teeth, + broken noses, +broken...).
It may really not turn out to be that hard once it's out of the car though. Part of the whole problem with doing grunt work under the car is you're not in position to get good leverage/force on it. With it out of the car, heck, it may "spin" free with one or two good whacks.
i don't get what playing hockey has to do with surviving a car wreck anyways...... but as for the potential of it.... anyone remember when colombianmax snapped a parallel link? he damn near wrecked it. and that's just ONE little part. a strut collaps or something would be alot bigger problem to keep under control. hell i have a hard enough time keeping MY car under control with all the suspension issues i have... but at least nothing on my car is at risk of flat-out breaking.
