Whats that smell?

For the last two days, I've been smelling gas in my car when Im driving around or just idling. The last time got gas, I used 89 Mobil and got about $10 worth on Saturday night. I was driving home on monday and started smelling in all up inside the car. I got out and sniffed around and it seems like the smell is coming from underneath the car, but I still cant pinpoint it. Can anyone help me out? Thanks people.

make sure your gas cap is on tight...if it's not then your cabin will definitely smell like gas

hmm...i do remember not putting the gas cap back on when I drove the car on Saturday after I filled up, but I noticed it and put it on later on that night. I will check to see how tight the cap is on again. Hopefully, thats just it, but would it cause the smell to come from under the car?

Check the fuel filter connections, the fuel line and the EVAP canister.

My car just started to smell like fuel after I've been driving it. I think it is from the weather, because it just got cold and has been fine all summer, but it still shouldn't smell like gas. What is this caused by? Fuel lines contracting or what?

okay, so I tightened the gas cap after I got some more gas today. This time I went to Gulf. The gas cap was not very loose when I opened the door, but I made sure it was tight before I left. I also wiggled the fuel lines to the fuel filter and I dont know what"canister" you are talking about greg. What does it look like and what does it do? I drove home from work tonight and didnt smell anything, but that doesnt mean anything yet. I'll let you guys know more after I drive around tonight. Thanks for all of your help.

yup....our fuel lines are rubber hoses. after about 10 years they like anything else begin to wear. when cold they expand and fuel seeps out of whatever cracks are in them. once warm they contract thus not letting fuel out...this is usually a problem for us VG'ers in the winter...

I had the same problem once

Or rather, my mom did right before she gave me the max. For a couple days, the car reaked of gas, inside and out. There were no leaks, the gas cap was on tightly, and even the mechanic my mom brought it to (yes, it smelled so bad my mom thought something was seriously wrong) said there was nothing wrong.

About a month after that, the hood started to lose its shine. The clearcoat on my hood is now gone. Now I have a black car with a spotted, chalky gray hood. It even picks up permanent water spots just when I wash it. Hey, in a couple months, it'll look like it wasn't even the original. Hope the same thing didn't happen to you. It sucked for me, but I'm losin the car to my sis in August anyway, so i'm not too worried about it.

It's a little off topic, but just givin you an early warning in case I'm right (don't think so, but I like telling my stories)
