Rather than guessing all the time, I would start with asking what your exact oil pressure is under those conditions.....................

Noisy lifters are just a common symptom of an older engine. I'm running around 55 psi with Penzoil 10W30 and get lifter noise. It's not a big deal...

I run Castrol GTX 10W30 and will get a clicking every once in a great while, but it's usually only if for some reason I'm running low on oil...

Its been a while since my 3rd gen has been on the road but the last winter than it was driving, it usually made a bit of clacking for like 3-5 seconds after starting the car in the cold and it'd go away right away. Is that the lifters as well? I normally ran 10w30 Castrol GTX with Puralator PureOne filter if it helps

you sure it's not broken exhaust studs you're hearing?

be careful using a thiicker oil. You don't want to over do it. I've heard some people accidently putting "thicker" oil (not sure if it was Xw40 or Xw50) into their engine and it ran sluggish. They went back to 10w30 and the sluggish engine performance went away.

I would guess you've got dirty hydro lifters - consider a motor oil additive that claims to clean out lifters and such?
If that's not it - i may be a failed lifter.

Or like some have noted - possibly you're hearing broken exhaust studs clacking together until they get hotter (thus expanding) the clacking goes away.

*edit*
btw, "clacking" can also be "ticking" noises too... it just depends

Same deal when I start mine up cold, 3-5 seconds of lifter tick. The car still runs good and has strong compression, so it's nothing to worry about...

ok well ive since changed my oil... i put in Royal Purple 5w30. but i still have clacking noise as i take off in low rpms.... honestly it could be my exhaust tho.. i have a previously used wsp y-pipe + catback so i dont know if its really sealed correctly where the y-pipe meets the manifold....

There's a good chance that your crush ring gaskets (from manifold to Ypipe) are miss aligned causing your 'noise' Does it sound like a fluttering sound? If so check your exhaust... if it's ticking... then it's prolly engine based (lifters etc.)

yea i mean its not actully ticking or knocking like engine noise ..when i rev the motor up out of gear its clean not ticking or knocking...
but you know when you go to take off out of first gear and somtimes it will want to bogg so you accellerate more and it just sounds like something is flapping or fluttering you said above...i also used "used" crush rings so thats probibly my problem... do they sell those copper rings at pepboys per say?

yea well the full system y-pipe +catback was used before and when shipped it had to be cut 2 times so that it wouldnt cost as much when shipped... so i have 2 joints between the y-pipe and the muffler that i had to weld up and im sure my stick welder left a couple gaps XD

well in accuality when i bought the full exhaust i also bought an underdrive pulley and a ground wire kit... i paid 500 for the y-pipe plus cat and full piping back to the muffler... i didnt think 500 was bad at the time..

Update: i just got done taking my full exhaust off.. I grinded down and re welded the spots where i joined the pipe together...I went to Pepboys, Autozone, and Advance Auto and NONE of them had the crush rings i needed for the y pipe.. so i finally went to napa and they had 2 brand new crush rings and some Liquid copper gasket material that i only put right around the rings and around the bolt holes... I finally got it back under the car, buttoned everythign up and went for a drive... The Noise sounds ALOT better now.. i can barely hear it anymore... all in all i think it was well worth it.. and plus i dont hear anymore leaking under the car WOOT!
