Strong Fuel smell inside the car at Startup??
I have recently noticed a strong smell of gas on the inside of the car when I got to start it up in the morning. I know that its not coming from the fuel injector lines as I tightend them both up, and I didnt notice any wet spots coming from the lines either. It can be cold or hot when I start the car up, and I smell gas in the inside of it, then when I go to put it in reverse, it misses to where you can feel it, until I put it in drive. It is a 93 GXE with 222,000 miles. please help!

I'd remove the plastic shroud that covers the fuel filler neck, behind the the left rear tire. Mine was caked in inches of sand that had eroded the filler neck AND ate into the trunk area where the left rear seatbelt is supposed to anchor. i'd get obnoxious gas fumes. Turned out mine had already been recalled and the neck replaced, and it still rotted out. IF I am correct, keep the shroud off and paint the new filler neck with primer and then rubberized undercoating. it will protect the neck and stop it from rusting. the shroud just traps mud & fine silty dirt.

I had a similar prob once: my fuel vapor line (which runs parallel to the fuel filler neck underneath the car behind the rear drivers-side wheel) needed to be replaced. It's relatively inexpensive from Nissan, less than $20 I think. Not a bad thing to replace even if this isnt the cause of your problem, and can be done in less than 1/2 hour.

although there is the search function, I also want to add that it may be an exhaust system leak.
I changed ALL of my fuel hoses up inside the engine bay (well, not me, but mechanic - so I hope he did them all). And still I can get the fuel smell.
I am quite sure that I have a rear-exhaust manifold stud issue causing the leak, so it may be that too. I can definitely smell it (when cold) if I leave my driver side door open. Whew!!!
