People who installed a short shifter!!

Ok I finished my install and noticed 2 things
1 shift **** wont stay on!
2 its a bit tough to move the shifter.
Is there time it needs to loosen up to stock feel?

1. my shift **** was a little loose at first. Super glue will cure that just use a small amount in case you need to take it off again

2. a STS will be a little notchier. If you loosen some of the bolts that you removed and replaced, it will feel a little smoother, but you dont want to do that. When you are shifting fast, the force could cause one of the nuts holding the shifter in place to come loose (you can still drive but the shifter would get very loose and be hard to shift and probably not great fro teh tranny either). Trust me on that
I got back under there, replaced the nut and tightened everything like it should have been. It was pretty stiff at first, but it loosed up some over a few days/weeks. Hopefully it's not just another nut trying to fall off.
Also, I've heard others recommend redline MTF in your tranny to make things smoother.

So your saying after using it more that it will be easier to shift with it?

When I installed mine, most of the bolts needed to be replaced, since quite a few broke off. It was quite notchy (and still is), but I got used to it. I've never driven a car with a shifter quite as stiff as mine, but I still prefer the shorter throw it gave me. I'd recommend one any day.

one other bit of advice is to lube all the bushings and pivot points on your shifter when you put everything back together. the joint that actually connects to the tranny started squeaking on my car a while back, so I took it apart and coated it in grease.. when I got back in the car, it felt like I'd sat down in another car.. shifting was smooooth and easy compared to before.

And yes, that's with a modified stock shifter (NOT CUT- modified).. it's one of the shortest throws you'll see out there. about 1/2 the people that drive my car can't drive it correctly.

I thought that since you're reducing the leverage on the stick, some additional stiffness is to be expected (the "can't get something for nothing" principle)? Or is it not really that noticable after the conversion?

it's noticeable at first, but after a few days you get used to it.

did you put the return spring back on when you installed it?

I dont think it's a big deal either way though

yes, it will be a little notchier than stock, but like the others have said , you get used to it and it's definitely worth it

pull your heat shield off, and screw it through the mounting holes to a board. now take a hammer and "adjust" the heat shield so it'll clear the shifter.

if you don't screw the heat shield down to a board, it'll bend the tabs way out of alignment and it'll be a PIA to get back on the car. don't ask how I know this!

i have a cut/modified shifter i did that ball move thing you talked about. worked pretty well. also, nissan recommends you lube your bushings anyway.
