Bad starter!!!

Been trying to start my VG30E project and all the starter does is spin!
I tested the 3 power points and ground for the stater! Positive wire is hot, solenoid (white-red wire) has 12v when the key is turned to start, I even shorted the starter positive to the solenoid power lug and got nothing but a spinning starter....I think I dropped the dam thing during the rebuild! Ill go to the savage yard since so many 3rd Gens have new altenators, starters, radiators and power steering hoses....this isn't my normal practice but since the boneyard is full of these cars with new parts, I might as well go get me a $20 starter! Or a couple of them!

Ready and waiting!

Freakin starter...rebuilt $80...used $20....

Man I thought thats what you decided to do in the first place? Oh well at least thats the last you have to do. I'm going to order my battery relocation kit tomorrow and send my injectors off. JY Friday for last min crap. Shooting hard for next Wed or Thurs for sure to have it running. All I know is it will run and move before I come back home. Oh and yours truly still doesn't have my cat-back.

just to double check bring your starter to a parts store and see if they can test it for you.

I'll do that...I tested it on my workbench and I couldn't get the solenoid to kick the gear toward the flywheel and spin! Just one or the other... Either will spin or it will close the solenoid but not both as needed.....????

The gears are messed up, b/w the starter motor and the flywheel. I had the same problem once.

No!!! Gears are in perfect condition....Starter won't kick the starter pinion out to engage the flywheel and rotate! It will only spin disengaged or engage and not spin! I had all this apart and inspected the flywheel before installing it on the crank...I think, iirc of dropping the starter in my garage...So tomorrow I'll let Advance Auto test it!

Oooo that - when the solenoid engage it is supposed to make electrical contact that is supposed to power the starter motor. It's was something about the thick wire outside the starter.

BTW make sure you installed the solenoid lever properly or it will not go all the way.

Never disassembled the starter just bench tested !The solenoid kicks the gear out but then it doesn't spin/ if it spins it doesn't kick the gear out.....Last time.....it won't do both like it is suppose too......

So you didn't check the gears - you gotta open it to see the gear damage. It's easy to open, maybe a little tricky when you put the lever back on.

Tested starter @ Advance and same thing on their test bench gear spins but it's not being push outward to engage the flywheel....so I decided not to spent $98.99 ($100) on a remanufactured starter with a core exchange....But to instead search the bone yard for 3rd Gens with new components! Found a newly installed reman starter for $26.38....It was there waiting on me....

Car started with new starter now it's time to bleed the rack and pinion, leak check, adjust timing, MAF harness issue, break in cams and get this thing humming

Yeah my wife told me, 4 yrs after buying that car to fix an oil leak supposibly and drive it for awhile and then sell it...I'm one lousey mechanic...All I could do, is laugh!!!!! My $1500 Maxima was lined up for other plans as well and it had nothing to do with flipping it either!
I wanted to do it quicker but my job was forcing ppl in on weekends, and making us work late during the week. So I had very little time to do it quickly, especially when we were forced to work 3 months straight, 7days a week at times!!!!! I couldn't tell you how many paychecks had 70-83 hrs overtime every 2 weeks....But she's running with a few small things I need to sort out like a leaking Brake M/c...corroded connectors on many of my sensors (which I've been patiently cleaning), a defective MAF with a broken connector pin...a small oil leak around the front crank area gotta locate that leak...Not exceptable), had a defective radiator cap, but had an extra on hand...a broken water temp sensor plug (boneyard)...set ignition timing...topped of all fluids... bled cooling system and p/s system...found 2 small holes in the exhaust resonator and rear muffler (No biggie ordering catback soon). Even drove it down the sreet and back....wow it was great to see it actually move again.....Checked voltage output and I'm getting 14.08V at Idle...I'll give her a little more TLC and we'll be ready for the paper work side of this and getting Insurance, emission inspection, and registration as required....
