NOT a redundant gauge lighting question

With regard to the speedometer NEEDLES...

Let me just preface by saying, I have a 91 SE white face cluster.

The bulbs were really dim, but the speedometer needle specifically didn't glow like the other needles, or it glowed just barely.
I replaced the (4) bulbs with 194's and they're great. (though I plan to switch them out with 168's next time I open it up)
Anyway, the speedometer needle still barely glimmers.
Has anyone had one particular needle lose it's lustre? Tried to find similar probs in the posts, but no dice.

Thoughts greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Hadman

why are you changing to 168s? I thought the 194s are brighter.

No the 168's are 5w, and the 194's are 3.5w.

194s Huh?

hadman,

I was interested in finding out what size bulbs go into the instrument cluster myself. I had posted something awhile ago regarding the Import Intelligence Intelliglow needle kits, and somebody told me to just change the color of the bulbs that are closest to the needles (I have the SE cluster as well, and want the needles to appear blue instead of white, but I don't want to change the color of the numbers when the lights are on). Thanks for posting the kind you used - I tried to look in my Chilton's manual, but I couldn't find the size that I'd need to replace the bulbs.

Was this a difficult install to do? (changing the bulbs) - I've heard that it's pretty involved, but I'd be interested in trying it if it isn't too crazy. If anybody knows what I should do in order to accomplish what I've described above, please let me know. Sorry if I turn this topic into a 'gauge-lighting' question.

changing the bulbs is not that hard. you have to take apart your dash (search to find instructions on how to do, don't feel like typing all that right now) the gauge pod is held in by 4 screws, remove them and pull out the entire box. the bubls are screwed in the back. remove, replace, and put everything back together

Bulbs

You can get them on eBay, or any local car parts store. As I already have the white face on my SE, I got some blue ones. They really do look great, but not quite bright enough, so that's why I'm eventually going to replace them with 168's.
I would suggest PIAA brand. I believe you can find them at Autobulbdepot.com.
As for installation, it requires removing the dash cluster. There is a great page on CraigB's website which shows you what removing this actually means. You can find it here:

NOW -- How about someone answering my original question?
