Mobil 1 synthetic
Mobil 1 synthetic
I remember awhile back reading about our org members pros and cons for using mobil 1 for our 3rd gens, im not too sure i dont remember. but my mechanic told me its not a good idea, not sure if hes right or not. What is your input on it?
I have been running with Mobil1 for about two years now and so far I had no problems. January of last year I took off the oil pan to replace the gaskets and fix the leak and didn't see anything wrong at all.
Wasn't the complaint from the org members is that it's actually not fully synthetic?

I used it for several years with no problem. I have been buying the NAPA synthetic lately, since I keep forgetting to buy Mobil 1 at Costco.
I just change my oil every 6 months, which usually comes out to about 1500 miles, though. And, I use a Toyota filter.

previous owner of mine used Mobil1, he had the car for about 300,000km IIRC and all was good. first owner had it for about 30,000 IIRC, he had it until 380k, and ive had it from 380k to 420k. I switched to Castrol Syntec synthetic at about 400k and noticed a difference so ive been using that, change it every 4 months or about 3500km
If my 3rd gen looked as good as your's, I'd use Mobil 1 Synthetic in it. I only use Valvoline or Havoline 10W40 in my 3rd gen. Change it every 3000 miles.
Of course, I use Mobil 1 Synthetic (5W30) in our 98 SE, 94 300ZX, 2001 Volvo V70T5 and the 2006 GMC Canyon...damn good oil! And I only change it every 7,500 miles.

I had heard good things.. So I put it in my 92 ve with their filter as well. For some reason now right when I start I hear pretty loud VCT clatter. It sounds kind of weird but this only happened RIGHT after changing the oil, and I put oil in the filter and put in the proper amount.
thanks for the input guys, ill probably switch haha. I use regular oil, change it always on time as well. But i heard, once you use mobil one, you cant go back to regular correct? just making sure.
You can go back to dino oil, no problem. It's just once you have synthetic in there the extra additives clean everything up really good, and in order to keep it that way you probably want to keep running synthetic. It won't hurt your car to change back and forth unless you don't change it at the proper interval or run the wrong viscosity. It will just hurt your wallet to have to buy oil more often.
I use Mobil 1 in my Z's with no issues at all. When I switched from dino to synthetic I did one oil change of Castrol synthetic blend as a break in per say. Since then running Mobil 1 with great results. As for the difference, I know I don't need to but I still change my oil around 3000 miles so for me I don't feel power loss when it's time to change and the engine doesn't feel like it's aging as badly. I suppose I could have similar results changing dino every 1500 miles or so but I don't see myself going back. Only drawback is that when I go to pick up my oil for an oil change I see how cheap dino is in comparison. I still think the trade offs are well worth the price.
the engine is built that 5w30 would be fine for it, and with a lesser weight the engine will feel more responsive as well. However with 170K on the engine chances are the tolerances in the engine aren't what they once where and as such 5W30 may leak through. I had 172K on my 89 300ZX with a VG30E when I put 5W30 in the engine and it started leaking oil. I knew it didn't leak before and that was my only change so I kept an eye on it but didn't worry too much. Next oil change went with 10w30 and not a drop of oil since. I'd say it's worth running it but be prepared for leaks to show up, if they do simply go back to 10w30.
I don't know if this topic is dead or what but I wanted to add my input on
the subject. My 89' Max has 150 thousand original miles on her with original
tranny and I decided to change her over to synthetic a little while back.
My father inlaw who is a mechanical genius said it's normally not a good idea
to change to synthetic after 75,000 miles. So what I did was start with a
synthetic blend first just see how she responds to the different type of oil
and do that for a couple of quick oil changes and then put in Valvoline fully
synthetic with a Lucas oil treatment and she has responded well so far.
So just as a suggestion you could try what I have done with my *****(89'Max).
