cams.

so ive heard somewhere here on the thread that us maxima owners (the vge30e owners specifically) could use like older z31 cams for a little more performance. what exactly is necessary to swap cams? would swaping in cams add a nice amount of power? maybe a sexy idle? lol.
or would the addition of a cam be useless with everything else stock?

you will need to grind out the block to make it fit

I'm just messin withcha, no idea really. Doubt there's much performance to be gained IF any... technically the z31 has similar HP rating to the 3rd gen so yea...

as John said, z31 stock cam is basically the same as ours. z31 turbo, i believe is different, and will probably make teh car run exatly the same or worse.

jwt offers cams. not cheap:

cost, $560

and when you do cams, it is a good idea to get/reman your lifters.

No point in adding cams without doing lots of other engine work.
valve springs, intake/exhaust work, tuned ECU.. you're looking in the thousands to make anything worthwhile really.

Apparently, it's not even worth porting and polishing the heads without cams, ECU tune, etc...

yep, the VG30E used in 2nd gen Maximas and Z31 had 5hp less than us (155hp) so we're pretty much the same

Stg 1 +2 Nissanmotorsport and JWT cams fit fine and work wonders when accompanied with all the other right mods such as ported heads, ported intake, headers, ignition system, Jwt ecu, etc....it really wakes the VG up!

actually the US-spec z31 motor had 165hp and around 173tq, and the 84-87 z31 cams have 4 degrees more duration than maxima cams do. Probably won't make a noticeable difference to swap them though because they still aren't anywhere as aggressive as JWT cams.

Or you can do some head work, replace lifters, valve work, then go with having your stock cams ground by Schneider Cams. Right at about $200 for both cams. They've done two sets for me and I like them. Like anything, just inspect them closely before installing to make sure the lobes are smooth all way around. Then add a set of Aaron's phelonic spacers and your engine should feel like someone who just had their first experience with caffeine.

The Schneider cams in my Max have a pretty nice lope at idle, but it's turbo so the grind is a bit different than what you would need.

To do JUST the cams and lifters, you will only need to buy new cam gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and upper intake manifold and plenum gaskets. Of course, it would benift you to go ahead and replace the timing belt and the water pump if needed while you're in there.

Of course I'll say this....... any benift from these modifications will be dependant upon the condition as well as maintenance up keep on your car.

A bit off topic, but how many miles where on your 2K3 when you purchased it, Chris?
