My Automatic.., 1993 Nissan Maxima. 160hp or 190hp?!
No VE no care
Really though VE 5 speeds can be hard to find, just keep looking. You'll also need to expend your search radius and keep your eyes peeled on here. There were several VE 5's for sale on here a couple months back, some might even still be available who knows
That's the spirit.

And speaking of swapping.., idk. The body of the car has 244 thousand miles on it, but I guess its in good condition..maybe? Its pretty damn rusty looking underneath the car..
But thats any maxima thats a 3rd generation today right?
I just want a nice sports package if I tried possibly trading this for an SE thats manual. If i did try dropping a VE manual engine in it.., what else would I be missing..
I think id be missing
-Spoiler with brake light built in
-Moon/Sun Roof
-Fog Lamps
-Smoked Tail lights
-Twin Exhaust (my current is a single)
All this together actually wouldnt be much.., . . right?
..what else? id like to see that godly prestine 3rd gen SE Maxima thats nice as hell and not too far away pop up.., but fat chance.
If no other, sh** ill have Nissan order a new engine if possible and have them drop it in..., but would this be pricy? Automatic .. to manual?
use Z31 turbo parts and turbo it, then you'll be able to smoke a VE
and mines not rusty
423,000km.
i dont know whats with the VG hate, theyre great engines. got mine rebuilt in July because of the age and ive been hauling **** ever since. though my mechanic who did the rebuild said that the VE's were great engines.
but, factor in on a VG a CAI, Y pipe, and exhaust youre at 190hp

VG guys say to "just" turbo the VG and then it'll be fast yada yada, well, but then you could "just" turbo the VE.. Apples to apples
Turboing the VG still requires a bit of fabrication even using z31 parts. Turboing a VE is "just" bit more fabrication. Brad is putting down right under 400 whp in his turbo VE setup on stock internals, etc. To make that much in a turbo VG requires a much nicer/complicated setup than the implied simple z31 setup that is oft-mentioned
Anyway, the VG is a great reliable engine, yes, but is just kind of.... dopey sans turbo setup or built a la Cmax
Even with ALL the bolt-ons on a VG, you'd be lucky to make 150 hp in a VG 5 speed.. And will even then barely run high 15's.. A VG auto.. I'd doubt you could even make 140 hp with all the bolt-ons. I don't remember the numbers offhand, but all the n/a VG dynos I've seen here over the years yield shockingly low hp numbers
Have some of you VG guys even been in/driven a VE 5? You should all find a local VE 5 guy and beg him for a spirited drive/ride just to give you some perspective on these discussions

there was a kid here with a 93 VE 5spd, his parents gave it to him and something very simple was wrong with the tranny, it was in his parkade and would need to be towed out. he wanted $500 for it, was fine except for the small problem. kinda kicking myself for not grabbing it

. If you're really motivated you can always "make" a VE that's why I gots me a 1990 VE. The rarest of them all.

I love my 93GXE but I'm sure a VE5 would be much faster. My 4th gen is currently my fast car while my 3rd gen is my nice ride quality and nice handling car. I'm keeping my eyes open for a cheap VE5. I'd love to see what the big fuss is about. I drove Brians matte charcoal grey back in 06-07 and it felt just like my VG, guess it just takes a highway drive to really feel a difference.
given the choice, go ve or go turbo, I would turbo. can't find a half decent ve around for a price I would pay.
and swapping ve into my vg body, no thanks. I am not scared of wiring, I just don't want the hassle of wiring.

Hi everyone. I just got me a 1993 VE 5spd w/ 160k and minimal VTC noise here in Seattle. I'm convinced the northwest, or at least Seattle, is a pretty good place to buy cars from the '80s and early '90s. It's rainy, but not snowy and never road salt, so there's lots of cars that have survived and still look fine. I got a kick out of seeing old Honda civics from the '70s when I first moved out here from Cleveland.
Anyhow, check out seattle craigslist, there's a few 3rd gens on there right now. Then check out plane tickets. Thats gotta be cheaper than putting a turbo in.

You are very correct about the Northwest. My sister in law is from Portland and every time I'm there I'm just AMAZED by the condition the cars are in. I see cars from the 70's and early 80's in fantastic condition still being driven around by average Joe's or families, and not even enthusiasts who've taken exceptional care of them or restored them. It's just amazing. I always see an inordinate amount of clean/original Datsun 510's too
It's not as hard as it seems and the result is pretty good. I was revving up the VE today, man it certainly sounds different from a VG. Did I mention I don't care for turbo, dropping my car or spoilers as it makes the 3rd gen look like a Bimmer and if there is a car I despise it's a Bimmer.

the handling is amazing on a 2" drop with a 3rd genim considering the VE swap as well, because of the crankshaft down the line i need a new engine, planning on a JDM VG30ET but the VE is tempting

That adds to it as well.

i cant believe after all the posts no one answered the guys original question. the 93 SE's came with the VE and its rated at 190hp.
if you ask me, bring the car back to life doing a full, and extended tune up and then keep it as a daily driver.
if you gonna turbo a car, do it to a vehicle that has potential. a FWD family sedan isnt the best route, but very doable.
