Is the Ypipe worth it? (Long)
Is the Ypipe worth it? (Long)
I know, it's an odd question, but I was just visitin' Warpspeeds dyno charts and I noticed something. My car already has more in the ways of both HP and Tq then the car they tested with both the cattman and ws ypipe...
so they show the best performing at 149hp and 164 tq. that is with the ypipe, hiflow cat, and full cat back exhaust. I suppose they didn't have a CAI or even a pop charger or something. that car had 111,000 miles on it and it was a five speed.
-What I am trying to figure out is why the number was so low. My car has the CAI, a hi flow cat, and a greddy full cat back. and it ran 168fwhp and 177fwtq at the dyno a couple of weeks ago.
- is it possible that my CAI, at $150, (place racing) created more power then the venerable $300-$400 dollar ypipe? I wasn't expecting to see that but I look at the evidence and I can't come up with anything else... plus, my car has 158,000 miles on it and it's an auto.
-was there something wrong with the car that they tested? is my VE a super engine? I just don't understand.
-what was the original hp on that car too. I would love to know what kind of gains I will get with the WS aluminized that Dan just put in the mail for me.
also, am I to believe that I will get a 18fwhp gain out of the new ypipe, and a 16fwtq gain? I looked at the cattman dyno sheets on there website and it had a 12 hp gain from stock at the wheels and a 15tq gain as well. and then the warpspeed site claims a possible 6.7hp gain over the other pipe. is that real? Am I going to have a possible 186fwhp and 193fwtq?
I am not trying to call anyone out, especially cause I have had the best customer service from Warpspeed I have had in a long time.
but what gives?

Dirk, trust me, it's aaaall gravy. The Y-pipe does help alot, but I would by no means expect any more than 10 hp or so. I finally put my GReddy on today, so now I have the WSP CAI, WSP Y-pipe, Carsound Cat, and GReddy Catback.
And, we all know you have the super VE to start with....lol....

could it be the advanced timing is the difference?
Dirksauve, becuase our engines are getting old, it could be many things.
The main fact is, the Y will benefit you. It's not like the Y will only give you xxx hp max. It will give you 10-15hp OVER what you have now. So since you have a pretty strong engine now, you will have an even stronger engine after. see?
And yeah, not all engines are alike.

Re: Is the Ypipe worth it? (Long)
I seriously think that your huge HP number is due to the extremely low altidude you have in Seattle.
Yes! The Y-pipe is worth it every way you look at it. If you are looking for drawbacks... they are: 1. Your car might be too fast for you after the install. 2. Your exhaust might get a little deeper/louder with your setup. You know what? There are no drawbacks.
Man, it's a "win-win" situation.
Also, I don't have the CAI, so I can't give accurate feedback. But, I have the POP charger...and there is no comparison, when it comes to the Y-pipe. My POP probably dropped, maybe, a tenth (at the most). The Y-pipe dropped over 3 tenths, easy.
Well, that's my input.

WSP dyno numbers
The real skinny was the Cattman pipe I had on my car had a big dent in it, this caused my rear 3 spark plugs to burn way to lean. Before we dynod I pulled one of the front plugs and it looked good. When I red lined it for the dyno, I had a miss, but was unsure why. When I got home, we did some checking and this was the only reason 2 seasoned mechanics could come up with. The electrodes were almost burnt off on the rear bank, front looked perfect. Moral of the story. Don't drive your 3rd Gen car with a big dent in the front down pipe, it causes problems. Remember there is only one 02 sensor, unlike the 4th gen cars that have 3.Would I give up my y-pipe, Never!!!

i gotta admit, after looking at the cattman pipe, it looked alot smoother. . . but honestly, the wsp with a high flow cat is cheaper than just a cattman y AND the difference is minimal. i'm gonna do the wsp setup and my own catback. WSP's service is excellent, and they took the time to answer any questions i had. and their shipping is very inexpensive. 17 bucks for cat and y is pretty decent. and yes, you need a Y,. look at teh BS nissan engineered under your car. question though, will it mess with emissions?

not a real good write up, but there is a how-to with some pics and comments from Czar on how to do advance the timing on a VE

I never had such a problem. I'm surprised Dan mentioned this becuase I thought they found out it was not the Y that caused the plug to go bad?

Yeah, it's really straight forward. The only thing that would hold you back are rusty bolts. But dang, you gots the plasma cutter and airtools!
