All of Nissan's blackout tape (over chrome trim) on my 90SE is deteriorating and looks like ****. How have some of you 3rd Generationers gotten this awful stuff off for repainting??? I know it's been done from past posts, but no post gave details on removing this stuff.

My SE is in the shop for a complete paint job, and I've got all the window trim pulled off. My intentions are to a) sand chrome w/400 grit wet/dry sandpaper b) apply adhesion promoter and c) Prime and paint with Flat Black but first I gotta get this 20 year old black tape off.

I've tried a heat gun, and baking a piece in the oven at First at 350 F then 450 degrees F. No luck.

I'm starting to think about going to salvage and pulling chrome trim off a GXE and then paint that.

Any Pointers Anyone?

 

Have you tried 3M Adhesive Remover? That stuff gets ANYTHING off.

 

Are you talking about on the window moldings right below the side glass?

Take them off and spray them with paint stripper. It works fantastically. A few minutes with the paintstripper and the stuff basically melts right off. Then you've got it down to metal and it's nice and smooth and perfect. Then paint it with some Duplicolor trim paint or even just flat black and it comes out looking brand new.

I made a thread on here a few years ago on this and how to remove the moldings as well. Of course the search function here sucks so bad it may be forever lost to the internets

 

Yes, those 4 pieces (2 on each side) below the window glass are part of the pieces I'm working with.

Do you recall what brand or type of aerosol paint stripper you used? The only stripper I'm familiar with is a very Nasty liquid used to strip paint on Aircraft - requires heavy rubber gloves. Haven't found any in spray can from, but will look.

Total, I'm working on 3 chrome trim pieces framing each of the 4 side windows. The 4th window side, that composing the door pillars, has black taped chrome strips also, but are still on the car as we haven't figured out how to remove them; the body shop plans to do those on the car. But now I wonder If that's going to work.

Front Windshield and Rear Window also have this black taped chrome trim also. I bought the 1 piece moulding (trim) for the Rear Window New from Courtesy Nissan, so that one's taken care of. I have two pieces also from the Front Windshield- (Left and Right) side trim pieces. A 3rd piece for the top of the Front Windshield is also still on the car.

In Total, I have 14 chrome trim pieces off the car that are 'blacked out' with this Nissan tape. With 3 (maybe 5) still on the car.

Randy - actually now that I think back, I used a brush on aircraft stripper gel. I'm sure spray on aircraft stripper will work just as well. I'm looking for my pictures but I can't seem to find them.

I either posted in a thread or created a thread on this very subject a while back. I even explained how to remove the window moldings complete with pictures. Even with a search though, I can't seem to find it now

 

Walnut or bead blasting might safer overall!

 

I've been searching over the last month, and I can't find that post either Lots of old posts seem to have gotten lost when Maxima.Org changed web servers or something. Old Bookmarks no longer work. Lots of Lost Art!

 

You might be right, but that black tape has gotten HARD, and it's really on there. Car spent most of it's life sitting outside - lots of UV. Bumper covers just crumbled when trying to sand; had to buy new ones. Plus some of those trim pieces have clips or/or seals on the back side - would lose those in a blasting booth. Top and bottom pieces on side windows are just long enough not to fit in any blasting booth I've seen. Windshield side pieces the same way.

U guys are talking about taking the moldings off, and I trying to find out where can I get some for my GXE to cover up the chrome

 

I think the chrome is tasteful on the GXE, funny thing is as time goes by more black stuff flakes off and I have more chrome than ever!
