The VE is good for impractical driving habits and makes the bulk of its torque where it's rarely used. The VG makes the bulk of it's torque where it's consistently used. VE is weak where the VG is strong and vice versa.

If you like to putter around town, either car would be fine. They both move along rather nicely and your grandparents probably wouldn't know the difference between a VG and a VE if they drove them back-to-back.
As soon as you use a burst of power to pass someone or try your hand at the 1/4 mile, a VE has a lot more top end stock than a VG. Considerably more. Actually, it has more top end than a stock VQ30DE, as well.

Yeah I have to agree, A VG has a good amount of power. All the vg's Ive driven, were impressive, Ive never driven a VE. I think the vg gets a great deal of Torque between 3K and 4 rpms. I fell in love with that, thats why I wanted a maxima lol! Put It in power mode to pass a slow car, and someone told me: wow I didnt know this car had so much power LOL.

They're both good, solid, smooth engines. The VG has more low-end grunt but the VE has more high-end power. The VE is also more technologically advanced with valve timing and direct ignition. On paper, the VE is more powerful, so that with the 5-sp MT would be my pick if I could do a 3rd gen all over again.
Man, I miss my 3rd gen.
