most manual trannies will whine a bit in low gears anyway, but if it's suddenly gotten worse, that usually means a bad bearing or you're low on fluid.
Check your tranny fluid level and see if it's okay. if so, you might want to change the fluid if it's been a while. if it's still making the noise, then it's most likely a bad bearing and you need to start saving for a tranny rebuild. the bearing that goes bad is about 3" diameter and costs almost $300 JUST for the one bearing.the rest are relatively cheap. (A complete bearing & synchro kit will cost about $550). a full rebuild should be under $900 if you pull the tranny yourself, but will cost $1000-1300 if you have them pull it.
Also a good time to replace your clutch if yours is more than a few years old. replacing the clutch won't require much more labor than removing the tranny, so your best off to just do it and never have to work on the clutch/tranny again for another 60k + miles.

Here's a sad story:
I waited too long to fix mine (was waiting for tax season) and one of my bearings gave out and really screwed up my tranny. Broken teeth everywhere, cracked case - locked up on the interstate. Luckily no engine damage - just really scary !!
I bought my replacement from www.mantrans.com for $750.00. That's what my tranny shop was quoting me for a rebuild. And I got a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty; not too bad.
My advice: get it fixed as soon as possible !!

My tranny problems
I've recently purchased another Maxima, a '94 SE 5-spd, and the tranny was making some whining noise, in any gear, only with the clutch pedal out. Pushed in - no noise. Anyways...full tranny rebuild will be done mid next week. Replacing all bearings, redline fluid, refill and bleed clutch fluid, and replace clutch if needed...I just gotta buy the clutch...free labor. Total cost = $1049 quoted with 1 year/12k warranty.
Hey Matt, what kind of clutch would you reccommend if I do decide replace it, which I probably will? THANKS!
