To just get a muffler welded on with hangers should cost anywhere from $40-60 , $80 is pretty high..........

$80 sounds high. I got a whole exhaust (from the flex back) on a cat-less car about a year ago for not a lot more than that here in Canada (converted $$$). Muffler, resonator, hangers, even a used exhaust tip at a reputable independant muffler shop.

Maybe you talked to a chain store (read: expensive!)

Call up some independant shops out on the fringes of the city. I found two of them in my city - both cheap! Installing a muffler should be hard to screw up so just go for the low bid.
