After 13+ years from when I got my UDP from ASP, I finally sent it back for them to repair. Yes, they still repaired if for free.

It appeared they reduced the OD of the hub, then press on a steel sleeve. Before sending the UDP, I thought they would have simply press on a Speedi-sleeve repair kit. But they did not.

The challenge now is finding a crank shaft seal. I spent all day going to various local parts store. Some said they had it in stock, but when I got there, it's the wrong size seal (too small) Others said they would have to order the seal. At this point I'm going to assume it's probably the wrong size seal that they would order. Locally my local Nissan parts dept is open tomorrow so I'll check with them.

I've never been able to find a correct crank seal at local parts places. The places I always find that have them in stock it just flat isn't the correct seal even though their parts systems say it is. It seems likethis crank seal is one of those VE parts where all the aftermarket catalogs/listings for them are just flat wrong - just like the oil pan seals.

In other words, dealer item only for the crank seal? Doesn't the VG and VE use the same crank seal? The seals they were showing me at the parts store was a lot smaller. It appeared the seal they had in stock (or in their system) wasn't big enough for a crank seal. So I don't know if the crank seal is a VE problem alone. Has any VG owner been able to get the correct crank seal from the parts store?

Here's something interesting, this morning I went to the Nissan dealer to buy the seal. I gave then the usual info, 93 Maxima, etc etc. The parts clerk said "yeah we got a seal in stock, let me go get it" And sure enough, he came back with the same small seal that all the parts stores were showing me. So he ran my VIN, his system showed the part number got superseeded, he said he'll be right back, then he came out with the correct size seal. So if dealer initially gave me the smaller seal, the parts stores may not be completely at fault. My guest, all the parts stores are using a similar reference number based on Nissan part number. So if Nissan is still showing the smaller seal as the correct seal, all other stores will also.

The part number wasn't superseded, he initially looked up the part for a VG and didn't want to admit he made a mistake.

My experience with the parts stores is the same.. VG30E and VG30DE both use a smaller crank seal and they sit behind the timing gear. Most of the parts store computer systems out there think the engine internals are VG30DE, so you wind up getting a crank seal for them. (They use the same rods and bearings and such as the VE).

anyway, if you could get the actual part number off the seal that comes from nissan (from NTE or whoever makes the seal), you could probably find it at a parts store.... But the computer systems just never show it.

I wonder about one from an SR or a KA if they would work?? I have an ASP pulley on my KA and it *looks* nearly identical in diameter as my VE pulley and seal...

I've always been able to find the correct one on the first try at Napa. Every where else is the VG seal. As for the sleeve on the pulley, thats how they make them now. I got mine 3 years ago and thats how it came.
