I was looking at suspension parts and came across this add. It claimed it was for an 89-95, which doesn't make sense(probably typo). I also checked the part number for the 4thgen (D2-N04), the part number for the 3rdgen is D2-N03. Looks like we might have some good coil overs for the 3rdgen.

Absolutely no way these are really for the 3rd gen Maxima. Have you seen the rear struts? I don't think there would ever be any way a manufacturer would go to the expense of recreating those. They would sell maybe 5 sets of coilovers tops, so it makes no sense from a financial standpoint to do it.

I bet these are for the A31 Cefiro and not the J30 Maxima.

*edit* yep, I'm right. A 15 second Google search for that part number shows its for the A31 Cefiro.

James92SE, you figured it out b4 I got a chance to search them myself, atleast I got to dream about them last night. I posted that thread and went to bed, damn it!!

 

Well we've been thru this several times b4. Actually our rear setup wouldn't be that much different than the 510 coilovers and the fronts similar to the 4th gen. There are templates to work off of instead of scratch but the biggest issue is there anyone here who would pay for them? Look how hard it was at first to get it ppl to get into the mandrel bent exhaust.

 

Yeap, most 3rdgen owners can't afford to pay a G for coil overs. If there was a set I'd dump my Sonar's for them no doubt.

Just curious, I've been searching for coilovers for my car and figured perhaps the ones designed for A31 would fit (with some small modifications of course). I'm aware that the Cefiro and Maxima names get thrown around loosely as being the same vehicle but hoped someone had tried to fit these on their J30. I surely don't have the money too. Any takers????

Could there be a coilover designed from another vehicle that would fit with minor modifications?

 

Maybe I was drunk when I saw this but.. I think I saw KSport's for 3rd gens on eBay.

This thread comes up about every six months or so... A few of us have made coilovers for our cars and they're not that difficult. the problem is that you can't get a decent ride height with our cars due to the extremely short front strut, and the lack of suspension travel that provides. i.e. you have ~1.5" of suspension travel up front before you bottom out the strut when you go to a setup like that. it's just not worth it unless you're a hardcore road racer. everyone else is goign to blow struts left and right (like I have..) In the ~5 years I drove the car with them on there, I went through three sets of Koni reds, which are the best off-the-shelf shock you can put on the car. Now if you want to go with a Koni 8610 or 8611 insert, be my guest to destory a $300 shock when you bottom it out on the first pothole. ouch.

anyway, it's just not feasible to DD a 3 gen Maxima with coilovers. there are a few of us that have done it, but it's just a bad idea if you want to listen to experience. (then again most of you guys just think I'm an opinionated ******* that hates trying to do anything to these cars.... what most of you will figure out after you waste your money is that I've done it myself and it didn't work and that I'm not as stupid as you think I am. )

 

No other shorter Koni inserts will fit?

 

the 3 gen Koni insert is the shortest one I've seen that can even begin to handle the abuse. anything else I've seen that's close to the length required is for tiny cars that weigh considerably less- i.e. Toyota MR2.. I've seen many other makes that want shorter struts use the 3 gen Maxima insert, if that tells you anything.

 

Since nobody answered your question this thread:
the design of the rear shock is integrated into the hub. because of this, the only way to change the shock is to replace the insert.
Traditional coilovers are either macpherson-type struts (like our front ends, which attach directly to the knuckle), or the more traditional coil-over-shock (not to be confused with adjustable coilovers, which is what coilovers usually refer to, anymore) found in many cars.
there is no company (that I am aware of, anyway) who designs insert-type adjustable coilovers for any car.
It might be possible to convert the rear to some sort of macpherson strut setup, but IMO, it wouldn't be worth the effort, as research, parts, and labor would outweigh the value of even the most expensive example of a 3rd gen.

in short, you want coilovers, you gotta DIY/custom (see Matt's points about that).

 

It looks like you could gain maybe an inch of travel if you modified the top mount.

 

My bad my dude!! Why don't you fabricate us some coilovers, I've checked out some of your stuff and I'm impressed w/your work/motivation.

I got these from my boy about 2 months ago, he bought them for his '90 Maxima SE. He ended up buying a Tahoe and sold the Max and gave me these sleeves. I already have a brand new set of B&G lowering springs, so I really don't need these. I'd really like to see if these will work with our 3G's and would be willing to give them away for real cheap. If anybody is interested just pm me; I'm not trying to sell these really, just putting them on this thread to show everybody. My boy claimed they were specifically made for the 3rdgen Max but seeing how nobody has manufactured coilovers for our gen I'm interested to see if these sleeves could work. I'd do this myself but like I stated earlier, I have B&G's on my Max. I believe he got them from ebay and that's all the information I have on them.

I made two versions actually, and never was able to get enough suspension travel to be a decent daily driver. track-only car with 1000lb/in springs? sure. but it wouldn't work for a street car on the budget .orgy people can afford. i.e. by the time I bought the proper Koni Race inserts, custom made tophats and strut tubes, the total price would probably be in the $2500 range-- and that's just the parts price, let alone any labor and design money for me...

Do it,..... I'd like too see the results as well! I remember the same folks saying the samething about Pacesetter Headers and mine are fine with a slightly modified Pacesetter ypipe! Just do it ! If it works for you cool,....But if it doesn't then you know now for sure!!!!

 

Ok guys, I am going to do a bunch of research and see I cant figure a way to make a set for the rear first and then see if there is a way to get some for the front. You are all right though, about the fact that it seems impossible (and highly nonfucntion) to get something like the typical inserts to work because like you all I love my daily driven 3rd gen. I bought mine for $400 and drove it home because the moron didnt know what he had. If i have any success and do finally figure out what to do I will post immediately and post instructions. My belief though is that we will have to do radical and go with a new maxima rear suspension and fab it in. Thats probably what I am looking into but is a last ditch effort.

 

The rears aren't the problem. they're easy. the fronts are the problem. find a way to give the car a decent ride height with enough shock travel, and then you'll have it figured out.. Good luck. I tried it many years ago and failed.
