What makes the tac needle go crazy?

So I picked up another maxx, a 1992 and when I turn the key on to acc and also when its running the tach goes nuts... flickering all over the place. Once it is running it will settel out and work properly but still act up from time to time. What makes the tach work? Where does it get its signal? Has anybody ever seen this and how did you resolve it?

Thanks for your input

There has been a discussion about this some time ago

http://forums.maxima.org/3rd-generat...cing-tach.html

Unfortunately, that didn't work for me and ended up getting another cluster with a working tach.

yeah i've read around that our clusters commonly go haywire after a while. I'm almost positive that you will eventually have a funny temp guage aswell with it bouncing around, also the tach might just stop working all together. I believe theres a sticky on how to soder the cluster back to normal other than that youll have to buy a new/used functioning cluster.

That's what I ended up getting after my speedo was going crazy. Couldn't of been happier since it made the interior look ten times better.

Yea, good point Phatmatt, I didnt think of that. I have been holding on to the SE clusters for a while now thinking of changing out the lights to colored led's but just havent found the time or the best information to complete this task. As for today tho I will swap the cluster and see how hard it is to swap out the odometer to keep my low miles...hahaha.. I still have a few issues with this car to work out (CEL, window regs, and a engine stutter... think its a bad injector) before I try to doll her up.

yeah its only about two to four phillips head screws that hold the odometer on, its fairly easy. that will also be a good time give everything a good dusting.
get some terminal cleaner and clean your connections while your at it

Are you kidding me Maximo? anything less than 150,000 miles is low miles to me.... hahaha. I swapped out the cluster but didnt swap out the odometer, just cleaned it up a bit and moved on. So yea it has two bad injectors and I have pulled out the fuel rail from my donor car and this one, now just gotta swap out a few injectors and put it all back together. Then its time to move on to the timming belt and complete tune up and fluid change.

Done and Done....

So I picked up this 92 GXE for $300, and I already had a donor car, so far I have; Changed out both front struts, the exhaust "Y" pipe, swapped out all side windows for tinted ones, replaced all four window regulators(three were gone and the windows held up with wood screws), swapped out misc interior pieces, swapped out the temp control unit, swapped out the cluster for the SE one, replaced two dead injectors, completed a full tune up and inspected the brakes. After I take it down for the dreaded emmisions test today so I can transfer the title I will do the timming belt change and a tranny fluid change.........$200 in parts (rockauto rocks) and 11 days in the shop ((whew)).... then I will hand it over to my beautiful daughter and hope she takes care of it.

Hahaha... Maximo yea it is an addiction alright, my wife says I should get some help, I tell her thats what the fourm is for... hahaha. Right now I drive a 91 GXE, My 18yr old boy drives a 93 SE, my 19 yr old daughter drives a 90 SE, and my 23yr old daughter is getting this 92 GXE.... two whites and two blacks.... last time I counted I have had like 11 different maximas in my shop (some in my name, some donors)...... its just that I have figured out all the ins and outs of this 3rd gen and I like the car. I can always find parts at the JY and its easy to pick one up for under $300 if you wanna swap out a tranny or an engine. Right now I have a spare auto tranny, 5-speed set up (complete conversion items) and a spare engine. I also have a grip of parts up in the loft of the shop so if any of the kids need parts I have them. If you hafta keep a fleet of cars on the road make sure its a Nissan Maxima....... hahahaha.

Now here's a man with a plan!

Wish the 3rd gens here could be as cheap and I would do exactly the same ............... the single one I own is probably worth about the same here as all of yours together atm

Couldn't have put it better myself. I'm doing the same for my VE with stocking spare parts. I even got a spare motor and 5 speed trans.
