Lost the key/Ignition swap??

I went out drinking last night. I dont do so very often and theres a good reason for it. Prayed to the porcelain god all morning. Anyways...

Before I left my car where its sitting now, I locked all the doors, but left the sunroof in the tilt setting. Well sometime when I was drunk I LOST THE KEY. It was on a jaegermeister lanyard the most visible keychain in the world and i lost it. There was no point in me having the key because I wasnt going to be driving anyway...maybe if I had got dropped off back at my car I could have got in and crashed on the maxibed but anyways IM DUMB just needed to put that out there so I dont get "dude you only had 1 key you're dumb"

Ive got my 92SE parts car in the drive. I got a ride to my car today and tried using the keys for that but it was a no-go. I unlocked the passenger front door via a metal rod thru the sunroof. Then the alarm that I couldve swore didnt work went off and I had to pull the horn fuse. Disconnected the battery before I left and its still sitting there.

My question is since Ive got the 92 with the keys could I swap the ignition in the steering column so I can use that to start the car? parts car is a 92SE auto the car i lost the key to is a 90GXE. If theres any reason it wouldnt work im guessing it would be because the GXE is a 90 and there are quite a few differences Ive noticed so far..

If anyone could help id appreciate it, Id hate to tear out this ignition and that one just to figure out it wouldnt work. Its crazy hot here today and it took me 20 minutes to break into the car. Hungover and drenched in sweat. NEVER DRINKING AGAIN LOL

Not sure offhand, but easiest way to check would be to drop the steering column covers on both and check/match up wires.

Assuming the wiring isn't TOTALLY different I don't see why you couldn't wire in the different ignition switch. IIRC they have goofy "one time use" type screws, but I may be misremembering that.

I'm probably wrong, but can't you take your vin# to a dealer and get a new key made there? I'm sure they have those things on file.

I am at home now, so I cant exactly check the wiring/plugs on the 90 until I get back to it.

You are correct james, there are 2 self shearing bolts on the bottom of the assembly that hold the top and bottom halves together. Im working on it with an easy out and a drill, should have it eventually.

I plan on getting a new key however I dont have the $$ for it at the moment so that will have to wait til Friday...

Thats the thing...I didnt drive either. I drove to meet up with my buddies and left from there with someone else. Had my key with me but had I had a place to put it The other thing is the keyless entry doesnt work on this car. Im pretty sure I just need to replace the control unit, but its one of those things Ive been putting off and that changed ummmmm today.

Good News though:

The Ignition from my 92 was a direct replacement plugs and all for the 90
There are 2 self shear bolts (whatever head was used to install these bolts is broken off after they're tightened) that hold the ignition to the steering column. With a drill bit and the correct size EZ-Out bit a guy I work with had both of these bolts out in less than 2 Minutes. Thank God for Hippies.

I reconnected the battery and was getting power to everything but the car wouldnt crank. Unplugged the theft control unit and it fired right up. Remember the alarm was going off before I unplugged the battery and I still dont have a key for the driver door so technically I never disengaged it However the car didnt honk or flash lights when I reconnected the battery.

However I did have to take GXE ignition off as well even though I thought I wouldnt have to. Everything worked fine with it on but as soon I backed up I realized the steering wheel was locked. Theres a metal piece similar to a deadbolt door handle where the ignition sits on the steering column; If theres no key it fits into a hole in the steering column that stops any steering. With the key it it slides upward into the ignition and out of the steering column so its allowed to move freely > which is the same as with no ignition there at all since I dont have the key.

Im sure a lot of this is basic knowledge to most of you but it was the first time Id had to remove this piece so if someone else ever has to...for the searchers

Need to get some new bolts so I can reattach the ignition to the steering column, hopefully I dont need to use self shearing ones

There was 1 good thing about the whole situation
requires prestory

2 or 3 times when getting on the highway Ive seen a canary yellow 91SE drive past heading the other direction. the only times I ever saw it was at the same interchange on the highway. I thought I had to be seeing something. Nobody was ever with me when I saw it. I thought I might have been going crazy or it was just something I was remembering from a dream I had /prestory

Well a couple blocks from where my car was parked in a parking lot across from the copshop sat the fabled yellow car. And I happened to have a camera with me. A hell of a camera at that: Had to post this for you guys

^Poor car  love the color, though. works well, actually.

as to the dealership method: a car that's over 10 years old, and has been daily driven quite a bit, the key will become worn. the cylinders will wear, too. a new key, in an old lock won't work. my passenger door will attest to that (current key, barely used lock, no worky).

You do have a key for the doors, you just have to swap the tumblers for the trunk, doors and glove box.
Go to the hardware store with the original bolts, get allen head replacements of equal size.

Yeah, that rust is BAD. I am not used to seeing that kind of damage.

That yellow isn't half bad looking. Not something I would buy, but I don't hate it.

As for the keys, I would think it wouldn't be that expensive to get them from a Nissan dealer. It doesn't have a battery, buttons or anything on it. IIRC, I paid $50 for a Nissan fob a few years back for a Pathfinder I had. My BMW was rape city at over $100 for one stupid key. They are sealed and have the buttons on the key.

For me, it would be worth it to have just one key that opens everything and not deal with a different door key and ignition one.

Using the ignition from the other car is just a temporary fix. As soon as payday rolls around Im gonna go see what the damage will be. Never had a valet key for the car just a master that was a hardware store key. Someone mentioned taking them a door or trunk lock, not sure if I would need to but I have that ignition out so I could just take that down there.

That is pretty bad rust on the quarter panel. However theres a burgandy 92+ gxe Ive seen around town that has that kind of rust throughout the rocker panels and front fenders as well. If you saw it you would be like Looks like it could get flat tires just from metal flaking off of it
