distributor replacement

Has anyone had to do this yet? How hard of a job is it? Any known write-ups on the procedure that you know of?

fairly simple, remove the cap(leave the wires on), mark which direction the rotor button is pointing(taking a picture is the easiest way)...once you have the button position mark/photographed...then just remove the retaining bolt as the base of the dizzy, then pull the thing out of the engine.....

when you install the new dizzy or if you are installing the original back, just line the rotor button back up to its original position that you marked/photographed to keep your timing correct..

Wow, you made it sound so simple. What are my best options, new, JY, aftermarket?

obviously new would be best, but j-yard would be cheaper, but you might get a used one with the same problem as the one you are replacing...

easiest thing to do is have it pointing towards number 1, if not make surer you make a note where its pointing

i would go new/reman, junkyard you dont know how the gear teeth are

Turn motor over to num 1 cylinder top dead center (TDC) pull cap. Unplug wire on dizzy. Remove bolt pull dizzy out. On new dizzy line up notches install refer to manual. Double check rotor pointing to #1 if all lines up should be good. Last get timing light hook up and set timing at idle.

my fsm shows 10-12 foot lbs. for the hold down bolt,
it could snap with a bit more ,
just a bit over finger tight then make sure the dizzy wont spin by hand..............OR ELSE!

Thanks for your help, it only took about 20 minutes to replace the distributor.
Idle problem is gone !!!!!! The bearing in the old distributor was shot, but it still works. Is it worth re-building?

for the future searchers and rest of us,what were the symptoms?

more importantly, can you wiggle the rotor and notice bearing wear?
