Low MPG on a 92 SE

My 92 SE (manual shift) only gets 14 to 17 MPG. I don't press the gas pedal hard and use cruise control most of the time. What should I do to improve the MPG?

I have searched the forum for advice but only found bits of info. I am hoping someone had similar problem can share what you've done to improve the MPG. Thanks in advance.

Well best I can tell, these cars aren't setting any records, but mine is particularly bad due to vac leaks and a couple dead cylinders (injectors)

I'd check there if you're wanting to dig in.

Regular tune up stuff like spark plugs, timing, air/fuel filter change. Fuel injectors may be bad as well. Also if you haven't replaced your oxygen sensor, you could try that.

I have a 92 SE manual and get about 21-23 mpg in city.

I have changed spark plugs, air and fuel filter, vac tubes. Checked timing. And all the fuel injectors show the right Ohm readings. No error code.

I have not replaced the oxygen sensor yet...does it have an impact to MPG?

A bad/slow reading O2 sensor can affect mileage. If you haven't changed it in a long time, it would recommended to change it.

Also check the engine coolant temperature sensor, mass air flow sensor and their connections. Those two can also affect mileage.

I still have the factory O2 sensor so I think it is time to change it. I have ordered the part.

I have checked the engine coolant temp sensor with an Ohm reading. It is in spec. Also changed the mass air flow sensor.

Hope the O2 sensor will make a difference on MPG.

Thanks for all the advise!
