cheap CAI....

I'm making my own cold air intake, its gonna look funny, but its gonna work the same.

Its cost me a grand total of : $80 canadian dollars, that included universal K&N filter, and piping from home depot performance.

Ill find out if its an improvement over the drop in replacement K&N.

I'll have pics tommorrow of the install.
How much do CAI go for from ppl who sell them?
NO i will not do search on that.

Re: cheap CAI....

"brandname" CAIs(WSP, Cattman, PR, Ractive) can cost anywhere from $90-220......you didn't use PVC piping did you??

not quite, the bends would be to long, i used ABS plumbing fittings.
I dont care for looks, its all about functionality.

I think DA-MAX was asking because there's been talk of PVC giving off noxious chemical fumes when heated and screwing up the MAFS. Dunno anything about ABS though.

pvc and abs plastic require lots of heat before they smell.

I work with pvc piping at work, and we use 5000watt heat guns to get it hot enough to bend.

Unless you start to burn it, then yes, it lets of deadly gases as a biproduct from the burning.

although with pvc piping, at least the electrical pvc piping, the bends for it would require alot of room to bend the 90 around the battery and then again down into the fenderwell. It might be feasible with 2" pipe, but then thats too small a pipe.
Im using 3" abs fittings, a 6 inch nipple from the air meter to the 90deg elbow, and then a 45deg elbow into a copper/plastic combo fitting into the fenderwell, where the K&N attaches.

Pretty simple might I add.

umm, no i shouldnt have, how much does it cost anyway,
Remember the setup only cost me$80 bucks canadian, thats a whole 2.5 hrs of work.
plus I'd rather make something myself and say that I did it myself. Its too easy to just buy a part and bolt it on. I like to experiment and go with trial and error.

Plus, im only here tonight cause im bored. I should be working on my other car, but choose not to.

and Im not gonna support a business that puts down others who make their own products similar to WSP> I say this cause of a recent post regarging some guy who found a canadian shop nearby that will make the y pipe for cheaper than wsp, and shipping included too, for a lot less than wsp.

Show me the post. I never heard anyone being bashed. I am not trying to flame but...WSP has the Y pipes down to a science. And really know there stuff. They dynoed 6hp higher than Cattman's what does that tell you? Remember: There is alot that goes into a Y pipe, for long life.

Dude, stainless steel is the same, wether its bought here or there, as long as its the same metal type, t304 I think. there are different grades, all grades will be equal no matter where they are bought.

plus, was that one dyno done on just one car, or ten cars that had been dynoed b4 the y with the exact same upgrades, then dynoed again with their glorious Y.

And six horse more than Cattman? what does that total up to be?
don't believe the hype.

sorry, i think the dispute was Cattman, not WSP, my bad, either way, i try not to suppport overpriced products as best i can.

how much is the WSP going for, on avg?

Hell, if my set up works, I'll sell it at cost to whoever wants, even install it for free!

You can easily get one for around $200. Also WSP took the verdict. It was tested on 3 cars that I know about. And one car it was tested on was someone that hated WSP. And he fessed up after the dyno and said it was higher.

please state prices in the correct currency, im gonna get confused. me pay $80 canadian.

If youre talking $200US, its definitely not worth it.

I hope were still talking about CAI, not Ypipes, I started thie thread regarding CAI
Now youre making me do a search on these rip off air intakes

As for the Y, Id rather start another thread.

Well you started talking Y's. CAI's are $140 with a K&N filter. And any color you would like.

thank you, I DID ask to mention the currency on the previous post.

so there you go, that 140 would cost me well over 200 canadian, thats over at least 120buxks.
Which makes totally more not worth it.

But thanks for your opinions though, still friends?

Here's the link to the pics,

http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/drcolt200....view=t&.last=

So far, its a tad louder than when i had the aircleaner box propped open,
It resonates nicely above 4000rpm. As for power, it feels a tad stronger near the top end of the rpm. Maybe an extra hp!

Ill dyno it again soon, but only because ive installed a functional ecu.

I now have two cv shafts to change. ooo hoo!

The pics don't look too bad. Usually, I'm the type of guy that hates "homemade" intakes, but yours is decent. Did you paint the ABS plastic? or did it already come that color? You should add some heat shield around the whole piping and it will look good.

ew, heat shield, im not a big fan of that stuff, i usually rip shielding and any engine covers off.

geesh, i think it looks pretty funny, im flattered that youre complementing me on a hack job! thanks@!

Its kinda like the bimmer lights, i hacked them in, differently than some guys explain on their websites, and i find mine to fit better than most, even others say the same.

I guess it doesnt pay off to spend loads of time on homemade jobs.

for anyone wishing to buy the home depot upgrade intake for the 92-94 maxima SE, you can inquire by email. If i get enuff replies, i will put it on ebay for sale!(im being sarcastic)

but if you guys want a sku number for the parts i bought, i can forward them by email. or just by a nice looking aftermarket one.
