Ok, another tail light rewire... (sorry)

I've used the search, so don't go there...

What I want to do is have my rear blinkers on all the time with my parking lights and have them flash with the turn signal. I DON'T want the traditional tail light rewire everyone else has already talked about 100 times since last Jan (the one on Craig's page) because I don't want my brake light to flash as a turn, I just want my turn signal to stay on in the back and flash when engaged. Anyone have an idea on how to do this? I have a pretty good understanding of electronics, I just wanted to be sure before I started cuttin wires & stuff.

Ok, sorry to bring this up again.

great idea, can't think of how you'd do it right now, but if i decide to try it and get it, i'll let you know. i'm sure it's possible though...

I saw this on a PT cruiser site (I hate those damn cars). It's for wiring Washer Lights, but I believe it would work the same for the turn signal bulb. The wiring in the max would probabally be very similar. If this is wrong Craig probabally knows why, or how to improve it .

Hope this helps.

thanks for all the confidence in me guys

there are some ways you could do it with wiring but it requires relays, diodes, resistors, and maybe some other stuff. Without these things, your blinker wouldnt blink the right speed, your blinker arrow on the dash would be on all the time, etc

here is the best way to do it:
http://www.cs.smsu.edu/~jack/max/blinkermod.html
that's for a 4th gen but the idea is the same, get a dual filament socket and replace the old one with that. Wire the smaller filament to your parking lights and the bright one to the original blinker wire. I can't tell you exactly how to do it since I dont have one of those sockets and dont knwo how well it will fit but I would imagine it could be made to work with a little custom work

Well Craig, you've done it again...

I think after reviewing that site I can figure out pretty easily how this can be done for both the front and rear on the third gen. Thanks AGAIN, Craig, and when I do it (if I get it right) I'll document the process and take pics in case anyone else need a quick guide on doing this (assuming I get it done and it actually looks good).

I thought of replacing the 1156 with a 1157 too. 1157 makes it alot easier. The only way it will differ from the original description is that the bulb will be dim with parking lights, and bright with turn signals. But I think that would look better as well.

You mean I could get that effect without any rewire, jsut by simply replacing the bulb with 1157????

There won't be much actual rewiring involved. Changing from bulb 1156 to 1157 WILL require you to change the socket from one that fits a 1156 to one that fits a 1157. The 1157 socket will have 3 contacts as compared to the 1156 socket's 2. You will need to run a wire from the corner light/tail light to fill the additional terminal in the new socket. There wont be much change to the existing wiring other than that. If you want more detail (wire colors, locations) I could look in my FSM and tell you, or try to write up a wiring diagram.

Craig posted that page before. It was for the 4th gen. The procedure should be similar for 3rd gen as far as wiring, but the colors and such might be different. I'll look in my FSM tonight.

OK. Get the 1157 socket. It should have 3 terminals, a + for the dim filament, a + for the bright filament, and a ground. Splice into a wire going to a taillight, all appropriate wires will be colored R/Y (Red/Yellow ?). I believe the color changes from R/Y to Green/White in the actual Combination Lamp, after the combination lamp's harness. Hook whichever wire you can tap into to the + for the dim filament. Hook the existing wire to the turn signal bulb to the + for the bright filament. Hook the existing ground (black) wire to the ground.

I don't know exactly how the socket will be laid out, or how it will fit in replacement to the stock socket, I'm not an expert in that area. But above is how you should be able to wire it up.

Reply if you've got any questions, or if you think I've made a mistake. I'm not 100% sure on all of this.

that sounds good. i know the sockets in our tails, 4 of em, are all in there sideways, like not pointing out, but across the lamp, so you might have to rig something up and pull out the old super glue. tell us how this comes out, i've liked that mod, but like you i wanted to keep the white, well yellow, but white in my case, turn signal.
