Better gas milege?

I had a quick question about the PR CAI and WSP Y-pipe. Do they give the car better gas milege? or do they just increase power. Thanks.

they increase power and would most likely give you worse gas mileage because you would be punching it to hear the beautiful noise.

lol...but would it really make better or worse mileage, on its own...

I couldn't tell you from personal experience but I would think that you would see some gains because you would have a more free flowing system.

In theory most mods that simply remove restrictions in the system should improve gas milage, although they might not. I've read differing opinions on this, probably due to things like KLoWnPR109's response!

i always thought mods, make power.. there fore use's more gas.. the restrictions of the stock stuff.. is stricter there fore making less power and using less gas, because the Ecu see that less air is coming in the engine therefor less gas should be used..

i really dont know know thats just my theory.. i couldnt tell because i go WOT on my car every day

Well, the theory is that you're improving the efficiency of the engine by removing restrictions, since it uses up a certain amount of horsepower just to pump gases in and pump them back out again.

That's the theory, but I thought about it some more, and sometimes what happens though, is that some of these mods will affect the power curve somewhat by changing the optimum flow characteristics of the gases. The best example I can think of is if you bolt on a 3" exhaust. The car will probably lose power at low RPM, but gain power at high RPM because even though you're reducing restriction and making pumping easier, it's messed up the exhaust flow and is now optimized for high RPM. You'd probably use more gas in this case because you'd be stepping on it harder to get moving.

IHMO, a CAI shouldn't do something like this since it's not quite as complicated an issue as exhaust and you're only trying to suck in cold air rather than warm/hot air. BUT some people in the past have reported low-end power loss/high-end gain, while others HAVEN'T, so it's still an issue that's up in the air a bit.

once you get these mods, you're gonna be revving the crap out of your car for at least the first week or two. if you have discipline, you might get better gas milage. me on the other hand, i will get horrible gas milage as soon as these mods go on.

When I put my cone filter on, I noticed an increase in gas mileage of 2 miles per gallons. (changed from 15 mpg to 17-18mpg ...city) I thought that was pretty good. When I installed my Y-pipe on, I noticed no difference in gas mileage...well, maybe 1 more mpg. When I installed my UDP, I noticed no change.

I always set the trip odometer after I fill up my tank. So, everytime I fill up, I write down the amount of miles that I went on this tank of gas and then divide the amount of gallons you just pump into the miles. I am now averaging about 19-20 mpg in the city. Which is better than I use to average in the city of Vegas. They have many more stoplights and the car doesn't run quite as efficient at 2000 feet.
