Transmission issue
Transmission issue
I've searched and search but can't find anything about what my max is doing. Hopefully there are still a few around here that can help. Sometimes, when driving the car it is stuck in 3rd gear. I've looked into the safe mode thing but everything I've read says it won't go over 25 or 35. It drives just fine, and will do whatever speed I want it to, rpms get pretty high about 60. It's very unpredictable as to when it will do it, but when it does it, I can tell immediately. It doesn't shift up to 3rd and stay there, it is just 3rd gear only. I thought about the shifter bushing but neutral is where it's supposed to be when this happens. I really have no clue where to even start to diagnose. My only thought is with the electrical gremlins of these cars, maybe some wire is loose or terminal is corroded. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

So I found the self diagnosis procedure and the first flash is longer which is the revolution sensor. The limited amount of info I can find on that doesn't really describe my problem.

I've had 2 GXE 3rd gens- 90 & 94- both had to have tranny rebuilds at ~130k miles. My trans guy said the seals and clutch packs just finally wear out. He also said the pump seals go bad. My 90 had a weird thing where one of the trans controller wires got pinched between the valve body and transmission body. But it took 80k miles before the insulation on the wires broke through and caused the tranny to not shift properly, stay in lock up mode and give some weird flash codes on the power/comfort switch light. So check those wires just to make sure you're not shorting out the shift signals. It's a long shot, but check it out anyway. Both of my tranny rebuilds cost me $1500 which is a pretty good price compared to current models. At 162K, you're about due a rebuild.
