Windshield wiper squeaky, arm loose
On my '90 SE, the passenger windshield wiper has started squeaking. I tried new wipers, gave them some time to break in, then I tried high quality new wipers. The high quality ones are a little less loud but still squeaky.
When I was installing the wipers, I noticed that the passenger-side wiper arm seemed loose. I compared it to the other one. The driver-side arm has some play in the direction it moves to operate, but the passenger-side one has some additional play in a different direction -- it has some play moving toward and away from the windshield. I imagine that means it's not being held against the windshield with as much pressure as normal.
The wiper arm nut seems very tight. It seems like whatever is loose, is loose underneath where I can't see it. Any suggestions on how I can get in there and examine it?

The mechanism that connects the wiper arms to the wiper motor has several pivot points and you probably have one wearing out.
Remove the wiper arms and then remove the trim grille beneath them and you will be able to see the wiper mechanism.

Dennis is probably right. The part you'd be looking for is called the wiper transmission and still comes aftermarket too in a complete assembly and isn't too crazy expensive or too difficult to replace. Just watch you don't crack or break the trim under the windshield when you remove it. I had to replace mine before because it was causing the hood to rub on the arm whenever I opened the hood. Once replaced all was good. I believe I got mine off eBay fairly reasonably priced. Just try searching 89-94 maxima wiper transmission on eBay as theyre all the same assembly from 89-94 and you should find something. If you do need to replace it another tip just make sure you turn your wipers on then off before putting the arms back on so you know they're in the proper position. You may also want to get yourself a puller and spray some penetrating oil because sometimes the arms can tend to seize up on the pivots and can be a bugger to remove.

I know this is a bit old....I am putting a new wiper transmission in my 89....To disconnect the transmission i took the wiper motor out and disconnected from there, and pulled the old transmission out...Was wondering if you connected the new transmission while the wiper motor was disconnected?...I could not reach thru the cowl to break the wiper/transmission connection....If i bolt the wiper motor to firewall i will never make the final connection....thanks, Jeff
