No, they're not related. Sunroof: when my sunroof is open, and I hold down the button to close it, it slides almost all the way closed (3" or so still open). Then I have to let go and press it down again for it to close. Not a big issue, just wondering if this is supposed to happen, and what its purpose is.

Door handles: On the outside door handles on all four doors there are little black plastic trim pieces that fit in a groove outlining the handles. Is there any way to take these pieces off and fill the gap in with -something-, and then paint over?

Every Nissan sun roof I've used has worked as you describe. I think it stops as a safety feature; make sure nothing is going to get squished, like fingers.
The door handles are seperate because they used two different ones: standard and keyless entry (key pad). If you don't have the key pad, and therefore don't have to think about fixing them, I don't see any reason not to take out the trim and fill the gap with body filler.

sunroof

the sunroof does it just incase someones head or arm or even leg is sticking out of it.... its a saftey issue, just like when you close the doors when they are locked they become unlocked, another saftey issue, incase anyone catches there finger in it or somethin... you know that happened to me once.

In my owners manual ('89) it says when closing the sunroof it will stop like you say. The manual explains it as a safety device.
