1992 SE will not start

My automatic 1992 SE will not start. It turns over .
What I notice that is peculiar is that when ignition
is in the on position , there is this humming quick ticking
sound coming from engine area . Standing in front of
battery , the sound is coming from under the battery
slightly to the left . Is this a normal sound for when
ignition is in on position . Wondering if this
sound is related to inability to start .

also try starting it in neutral(N)....the neutral inhibitor switch might be bad.

what happens when a starter goes bad? i wsa gonna say that, but he says it "turns over" which I assumed meant it cranked but engine wasn't catching.
The ticking's normal...I've heard it in several nissans (new and old).

remove your starter and take it to autozone(if you have those) and they will test it for free.

Make sure the connections to the starter are tight from the battery, mine didnt start, i reaplce the starter and it wasnt it, just a loose connection, maybe that happened to you.

I tried to jumpstart car today . It turned over .
I tried quite a few times . I tried to start from
neutral . Did not start . Could it be flooded from
all the attempts ? Can I press gas pedal all the
way down to start as you could do with carburetor
cars ? My cousin has me worried it could be
timing chain . Can car turn over and timing
chain be the problem ?

Start with the basics and make sure you're getting these: air, fuel, spark.

Air usually isn't the problem, but all the same check the intake hoses for obstructions, clogged filter, bird's nest in hose, etc.

Check fuel pressure, working injectors, injectors aren't leaking.

Check the ignition system to make sure you're getting spark. Check the battery cables like mentioned and also all the electical connections under the hood.

Borrowing a service manual from the library or better yet, buying one will tell you how to check these. If the basics check out, then look into more complex problems.

BTW, a service manual will help you diagnose this all anyway, so I probably didn't have to type all that... GET A SERVICE MANUAL

I would almost bet it is the fuel pump. Mine did the same thing when it went out. Try taking the access plate off and hitting the top of the fuel pump. Then see if the car starts. If so:FUEL PUMP time! Let me know if you need any help.

It is not the starter if it is turning over. If it were the starter, it would not do anything at all when you turned the key. Trust Me I have been threw alot of starters in my lifetime.

Don't hit the starter with a Hammer

The starter that comes with the ve has the permenent magnet setup (brushless), the vg engines have brushes (another reason why the ve is better ) when striking the starter for the vg, can free stuck brushes.

But it could still be the starter solenoid or maybe the starter relay.

It is not the starter if it is turning over! Also you can hit the VE starter. Mine was bad for 2 weeks, and I hit it to start it everytime.

Here's another tip: don't give it gas as you're cranking. We're fuel injected, so there shouldn't be a fuel problem as long as your pump is working (you know how to test that right?)
