Hi all. This is my first post, but this looks like an amazing site

I am going to check out a 1992 Maxima SE slushbox tomorrow and I want to know if there are specific things that I should look for. The car only has 64K miles, so I'm hoping that it'll run strong for many years to come.

I'd appreciate all advice that you can give. It's supposedly in great shape and I can get it for about $5K. Is this a good deal?

Also, one specific question: I'm a bit skeptical about the low mileage since carfax found 1 inconsistency (in 6/92 the car had 5,200 miles but in 8/92 it should as only having 29 miles). So is the odometer digital or analog (which, of course, is much easier to roll back). Thanks again!

sounds like a good deal, iunno about the mileage. Watch out for VTC (prone to the 92-94 se's) its a clicking noise

Try searching (if possible) like "common problems" or something to that effect. Or try searching for these individual common problems (as well as those mentioned):

-window regulators >Sometimes the mechanism that raises/lowers the window goes.

-Bose stereo >failure prone

-door lock timer >sometimes fails resulting in wonky lock operation.

-auto transmission/tranny failure >somewhat fragile transmission. Make sure it's in good health without doubt before buying.

Good luck!

when i got my 92 aug 01, the previous owner i swear could have been Mr Clean's cousin. 96k miles at the time paid about 6k for it. Only problems ive had with it to this date are:
- 2 blown foglight bulbs (fixed)
- rear passenger window regulator (fixed)
- Bose stereo (replaced by aftermarket)
- replaced front lower control arm (i hit a curb)
- spoiler mounts rusted apart on the edges (not fixed)
- antenna motor (not fixed)

My only tip: Get a 5-speed.
