does location matter?

So I remember getting a recall notice for this a while after my parents bought and registered this car in arizona. The dealer at that time had told me not to worry about it becasue it was arizona and it wouldn't effet the max being in that state (not a lot of need to salt the roads in phoenix). Anyhow, now I live in northern california and get to deal with snow and junk in the Sierra mountains. If there is rust damage, do you guys thin I could still ask Nissan to fix this under the recall notice.

Doesn't seem like it matters where the car is registered since salt and mud can get there in any snowy/icy region. I agree that cars in the "salt belt" are probably more prone to the issue, but can't this issue occur anywhere?

i think the recall is nationwide
so it doesn't really matter where you live or registered your car, you can still bring it in for the recall repairs. Better call nissan first, i say

The recall is for cars in the North/North-East.
Someone earlier in this thread quoted the recall word for word I think.

i live in the midwest and my vin didn't have a recall on it so i guess it's just limited to the north and the northeast

I was jsut checking the regaional recalls list on the NHTSA website and directly under the maxima recall for the fuel filter tube is one for the Infiniti G20 fuel filter tube leak (same issue). The population listing covers the same areas:

Population: 85,000 vehicles registered Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

Hoever, under the problem section it says:
Problem: Corrosion of the fuel filler tube assembly can occur, especially those vehicles operated in the 'salt belt,' resulting in fuel leakage. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.

It says "especially", which doesn't mean limited to right - just that those in the "salt belt" are more prone to the issue.

Eh, maybe I'm just pushing for a reason to get a new car.

If you take your car(s) to the dealer with the rust or seatbelt problem, they should fix them under the recalls or lifetime warranty on the belts.

the fuel filler tube issue can be extended to cover cars that were driven in the "nasty" states through a winter, or in areas that salted roads are common. Your local dealer will have some leeway in those situations, as there will always be cars that were bought in Arizona and then moved to MN for a few years, or vice versa..

thanks

After reading about this post I went to the local Nissan Dealer and talked to them about fixing my chit. They looked at it and said I would have to fix some rust that was in the same vacinity but I told them it was caused by the gas neck. Then I left angry but later recieved a call from the guys at nissan and was told to bring my car bak. Yesterday they said they would fix everything and I thank you guys for informing me. Now it will be less of a pain for me since I will be getting a paint job this sumer.

I had this recall performed on my 90SE when I first rec'd the notice.

Now I just checked the filler neck/seat belt area and it's all rusted anyway!

Will Nissan "fix" this again? The first repair should have stopped this from happening, but didn't!

What's that 800 number again?

thanx,
Tim

I'm pretty sure that they will only fix it once. I am almost 99% positive about that. I don't think they're even gonna fix mine at all now. They are trying to screw me. They want to total the car out and take it. They willl write me a check for what I paid for the car, minus the $7K+ I've put into it in mods and repairs. Yeah, right ...

Just wondering....

What if they said its fix and the work wasn't really done. I have a 90 Maxima and a 96 Nissan Quest. I just took the quest to get the filler gas tube replace because of the recall. Not sure if it is done or not. Since I am looking to sell the Maxima, I hope they offer me a phat check. Otherwise, they will have to fix it.

Im getting scared now. I have the same problem and I have an appointment to drop my car off monday. I have rust in both of the wheel wells and some rust under the back. Is there "anyone" out there that hasnt been screwed. Also do you guys think that they will fix all of the rust that was caused by this problem I mean I dont have a huge amount but enough and a couple of holes about the size of a fist.Im really hoping theres someone out there who has had a good experience. And can make me feel atleast a little better so I dont go in there all defensive.

I haven't been screwed

I haven't been screwed. I had mine fixed about 2 years ago though. I was in Daytona Beach at the time. My roomate and I had went to the Home Depot where he worked so he could pic up his check and I was sitting in the car which was parked in the loading area/Fire lane. The guy all of a sudden came up to the window and told me that my car was leaking gas, I jumped out and there was a pool of gas all over the ground at the left rear of the car.

I called a tow truck and they towed it to the dealer (really nice people by the way, always gave me a good deal and never charged for any diagnostics, even if I didn't fix the problem there) who told me it was a recall Item. They fixed it for no charge. I think I caught it before it got into the fenders or anything. I wish you guys luck in getting yours fixed

I called the 800 number for my 91 SE... they said that my VIN number didn't qualify for the filler neck recall. Maybe i should call them dudes up corporate Nissan and ask them again.

Good thread.

Usually, it causes leaking in the trunk and major rust before the fuel filler stem ever leakes that much gas. I've never heard of anyone actually having thier car spurt out gas like that. Your case is an unusual one, and if I were a dealer I would want to fix it promptly too.
I'm going to have to fix mine myself, though.
