Are there are specific maintenance/repair items I ought to look for/check on when looking at used Maximas?

What common problems have you run across?

Thanks

I have seen several 1990 vintage in the paper with 50K miles or less. Although not stated specifically, I assume the SE version as they have leather interior. Auto or manual is not mentioned in the ad, although I hope 5 speed.

Thanks

not all have leather.....

not all the SE's have leather...as a matter of fact, i think more GXE's have leather then SE's. you will only find a 5 speed in the SE. also, the 1989-1991 SE has a diffrent engine then the 1992-1994 SE. if you have any questions, email me or anyone else on the 3rd gen board..im sure all of us are gald to help...also check out http://www.gen3.4mg.com

had a 1989 SE until Aug 18th...

the 89 SE had been in my family since brand new. The car was always taken care of, had all its scheduled maintenance, etc, and lived to 228K miles (excluding the 20K or so added miles when the speedo was broken for about a year). I wrecked the car with the trailer hitch of a pick up truck unfortunately. What I will say is DEFINITELY go with a 5 speed. In roughly 250K miles the clutch was replaced once, but was due for a new one at the time of the accident. I had contemplated getting a new clutch for about 2 years, but the one I had just kept going and going. if I had not wrecked the car, I'm sure it could have easily gone another 250K miles. She NEVER let anyone down, and NEVER left anyone stranded. If I had needed to, I would have driven the car cross country and back without any hesitation. I had the utmost respect for the car. She never burned oil, always sounded like brand new, never leaked anything (except the sunroof did leak every now and then during a torrential down pour). In my opinion the 1989 Maxima was one of the best cars ever built. Avoid the leather, and the auto tranny. The leather eventually wears out if not teken care of frequently, and the auto trnny, i've heard of some problems with them failing prematurely-its the achilles heel of the car.
Good luck in your search for the right one. Choose wisely and she won't let you down.
