Lost my only KEY

I have tor my house apart but I can't find the key to my 92 SE. The car is unlocked luckily. Anyone have any ideas or estimates of how much this blunder will cost me?

thanks,

kevin

option 1...

since the car is unlocked you can get into the door and remove the lock cylinder. Take it to a locksmith and have a new key cut...

option 2...

call dealership and see what they need to make you a new key. my bet is there's numbers somewhere on the car that they can use. or they might be able to cut you a new key based on the lock cylinder as well...

Yep. That's right. If I remember correctly, there is a second set of numbers on your door lock control box that denote your key. I think that's where my dealer looked when I had new keys made. Anywhere from 10 - 35 dollars can be charged.

Do you know where the door lock control box is?

Thanks

1.) Get a flashlight
2.) Open passenger door
3.) Get on floor and look up
4.) Under the dash there should be a gold box there somewhere.
5.) After finding the box, write down all the numbers on the label in the order they came off.
6.) Take the numbers to your dealer, and they should be able to figure out which is which.

As a side note, one of those sets of numbers is for your electronic locks to be reprogrammed.

There was a number on a sticker in my glove box. That number and $2.95 got me a new key at my Nissan dealer. The key worked very well in our old locks.

A complete set of cylinders and keys for our car is about $250.

I've actually heard of this too. Mine just happened to be under the glove box. My best advice is to look around that area an obtain every number off every sticker that way you have to have it!

that's for GXEs only, SEs do not have that keyless entry system and dont have that box there

I would think they could get the key number from your VIN though which is located several places on the car

That's what the local dealership told me, bring them the VIN and $6.95+tax and they'll make me a new key.

Re: Key replacement

Similar thing happened to me a few wks ago, except i wasn't lucky enough to have the car unlocked. anyways...as far as i know your problem is going to be a little more expensive than these previous posts have said. when i inquired to a nissan dealership near me about my situation they told me that it is only possible to get a key code and get a new key cut by nissan for maximas 95 and newer. it cost me 175 to have a locksmith take apart my doors, trunk and steering column and cut me new keys. good luck

It wouldn't make sense if I give the dealer the vin # and I can get a key made for the door. What happens if someone take down my vin # and go to the dealer and get a key made. Also, I lock myself out one day and to my surprise it is soooo easy to unlock the door with a jimmy. No I am not a thief.

When and/or if you get the new key, make several copies. Keep two at home. Keep one with the significant other (or parents). You never know.
