Race against a Pontiac Sunbird?!
A friend at school wants to race his '91 Pontiac Sunturd coupe versus my Max. He's saying that it'll either be really close or he'll just blow me away. His car has the optional 3.1L V6 (and three-speed automatic!) with 140 hp instead of the more popular 2.0L 4 cylinder that pushes 96 hp! My car is about 600 pounds heavier than that crapbox, so it might be close off the line. But once I hit 2800rpm, I should start pulling away. As speeds increase, the gap would get larger.
I went for a ride in it last week up to maybe 45mph (his speedometer doesn't work). Yeah it's pretty quick from a standstill, but that pushrod engine can't rev for its life after that. And let me tell you something else... that car is scary at that speed compared to my car where it hardly feels like I'm moving. It feels so light and seems like it's going to fall apart and there's nothing holding it together. No solidity at all. Did I mention it's ugly too?
I don't even think it's worth stepping down to that kind of ilk. He says American cars are good off the line, and foreign cars have their power upstairs. I told him my car is not a Honda Civic that hardly has any torque and at such high and generally unuseable engine speeds. I have nice low-end power in addition to an awesome midrange. But I would like to prove that my car does not have a torqueless, high-revving engine like he probably thinks I have.
In the end, it's probably not worth the risk of getting pulled over just to blow away that ****box that will never ever hold a handle to my car in terms of acceleration, braking, handling, stability/solidity, roominess, and of course, looks.
What do you guys think of this?
