I have a 92 Maxima GXE and my speedometer is not working either. I was told by the Nissan dealer that our cars do not work off cables but a type of fiber optic or something. He said that the sensor could be bad or the fiber optic is damaged. I was going to replace the speedometer but it was around $300. I felt i could do something else with the money. Good luck.

Its not a traditional cable, nor is it a fibre optic cable. It is your everyday automotive cable. The speed sensor on the transmission sends electrical signals to the speedo unit in your dash. This information is then feed off to all the other parts of the vehicle that need the information.

Common Faults:

Faulty speed sensor (common)
Speed sensor not located into the transmission correctly
Faulty wiring between sensor and speedo
Faulty speedo unit (common)

If you stand at the drivers side of the car looking into the engine bay, to the right hand side of the engine you can see your oil filter, just below and towards you (on the transmission) there is a cylindrical part with wires coming into the top of it. This is the speed sensor. It is held in with one bolt.
(this assumes you have an auto - I have no idea for a 5-speed)

for a 5-speed simply get well above the engine look at the top back left section of the transaxle housing, you can see it from the top with a flashlight and get get your hand easily down there too to remove it....just a black cable going into the housing. If you have a Haynes manual its simple, just follow the illustrations
