there's actually TWO coolant temp sensors for the engine. the black one runs the gauge inside the car, the red one feeds the computer information.
disconnect the red one while the engine is running, and the fans will come on about 5 sec later.

temp switch? I dunno.
but yes, the red guy is the coolant/engine temp sensor. try cleaning the connections and see what happens. I don't think they're too much to replace, but it's worth trying to clean first.
