CV Half Shaft

CV Half Shaft
I need to replace the CV half shaft and boot on my 91 SE. Can't just replace the boot because there is already dirt in there. Anyone know where I can get it cheap? Already checked courtesy and they don't have it on their site. Gonna call and ask but wanted to know if there were any other places I should check.

It must be the month of CV Joint problems
I was just routinely doing brake maintenance. Pulled out each wheel to check pads, rotors, calipers, etc.
When I got to the front passenger side I notice some grease around the wheel well. My heart was beating 4 times as fast. When I finally looked underneath, nevertheless, the wheel side boot is torn and is definately leaking gunk. Eventhough I consider myself pretty well versed in this car, I will definately not attempt to fix it, after the horror story i heard earlier this week on this same topic.
I will go outside tomorrow, and put some duct tape around the tear and hope that I will just have to pay for the boot and grease.
Or would you guys recommend I just drive on it until I hear clicking sounds and then just have the entire right axle replaced? What are the cost differences?

They are really not that hard to do, especially the passenger side. As long as the carrier bearing is not rusted you should not have a problem just sliding the old one out and putting the new one in. If it is rusted then you can always take it to a mechanic if you don't want to break it loose yourself. Since your boot is already broken and you just noticed the other day, I would get a remanufactured axle because there is a good chance water and dirt got inside and the grease is almost gone, and once that happens it's only a matter of time before the joint goes bad. The labor for taking the boot off pretty much pays for a remanufactured axle. Good luck man.

if you're gonna have someone else do the work, i guess you can have them replace the axle. however, if you're doing the work yourself, just change the boot and save yourself $80 in parts. i see no point in changing the whole axle unless you've got symptoms of a failing joint.
if you're doing the work yourself, make sure you get as much of the old grease out of the joint before putting in new grease.

Yeah i have the exact same problem too
both of my front boots are torn and it's gonna cost me around 350ish to fix. Is that too much to replace the front two half shaft?? And how long can i put off this repair until i really need to do it?

Don't replace the axles. Just call around to a few drive and axle places and ask how much it costs to rebuild the joints. It wound up only costing me $54 to rebuild the one joint and then I did the work myself.

$54 to rebuild one joint, and you can buy a reman unit with lifetime warranty for $60, and you don't have to cover yourself and all your tools in boot goo? hmmmmmmmmmmm.

I did mine myself and it wasn't really that bad, but I have done a few in the past too.
People tend to forget about the inboard joint, I think the axle is well worth it.

If you can find the right axle then you can buy that pretty cheap. I couldn't find anyone with the correct axle for my car because they changed the fricken hub in 7-91 and I could only find the axle that fit the previous one.

And you get both inboard/outboard instead of just outboard.
