Are the Bridgestone SP-03 Tires really that good?

Hey, I'n in the market for new tires, and these tires on tirerack have superlative ratings compared to the others, are they really that good, anything better for dry/wet traction? Also, I have 18X8.5 rims and 235/40/18 currently, was thinking of going 245/40/18 due to width of the rim, will these stick out? Anyone with any pictures? Thanks.

The S-03 is a great tire. Compared to the S-02 PP, it has better wet traction, but the S-02 PP has better dry traction. If you can afford them you won't be disappointed. Personally I'm love-struck with my Toyo T1-S... they are cheaper than S-02 and S-03, incredible wet and dry traction (one of only a few tires at the same level as the S-02/3) and have 280 treadwear.

I do not know anything about tires...so can you tell me what 280 treadwear is?
Thanks

In general, the higher the treadwear the longer a tire will last. Some manufacturers lie about treadwear however. My toyos have a 280 treadwear which is the highest you will find in a Maximum Performance tire, and it really does have great treadlife. On the other hand the Falken Azenis is also rated at something around 200, but I hear it wears like a tire with 80 treadwear, meaning they wear out VERY quickly.

Normal passenger car tires will have a treadwear anywhere from 300-500. Maximum Performance tires like the T1-S, S-02/3, Michelin Pilot (whichever their highest performance tire is), BFG KD, Yokohoma AVS Sport and Intermediate, etc will typically have a treadwear between 140 and 200, with a few exceptions. Tires in categories between Max performance and basic passenger categories will typically have treadwears in between the figures I just stated.

Ahh thanks...hmm I think I will be very dissapointed from going with my passenger michilin x radials to performance tires later on then, cause tires are just too damn expensive.

T1-S's cheaper than the S-03's? You sure about that? Most places I look the T1-S's are very expensive, similar to Michelin Pilot Sport's. The T1-S's and Pilot Sport's are the two most expensive tires out there I think.

You might want to consider a lesser performance tire, maybe a V rated rather than a Z rated. Possibly a all season High Performance. It will generally cost less and you should get more life out of the tire. I am running Potenza RE950, excellent tire. I wanted the 730's but you get no mileage warrenty. The 950's come w/ 40k mile warrenty and still have aggressive tread and are directional. Also come with AQ2 technology.
I guess I want performance but also need a long lasting durable tire. I can't afford to replace tires every 20k miles.

Are you happy with the RE950s? I need to replace my set of Michelin MXV4 Plus soon. How noisy are the Bridgestones? I assume you are happy with all around performance/handling, etc. ...correct?

I know you asked I30Mike, but I also have Bridgestone RE950s on my stock 15s. And I love them. They are pretty quiet. Best overall performance(dry/wet handling)IMO.

It sounds like most people have been very satisfied with the Bridgestones.
Thanks for the feedback!

Wow you are right, in my size, 235-40-17 the S03 is $170 at Tire Rack and the cheapest I've seen the T1-S for is $178 in that size. The S-02s are more expensive, so I just figured the S-03 would be as well.

Cumalot is right.
I am more than pleased with them. When going to 17" with 45 series tires I expected a harsh ride. Not at all with the 950's. Honestly there was hardly a diff between stock. The 950's are very durable. They have a strong side wall and are a bit thicker throughout. (Compared to the rest of the Bridgestone line.) The AQ2 technology allows the traction to be maintained as the tire wares down. Excellent in the rain as well.
Like I said, you can definatly find a higher performance tire, but these have the best of both worlds.
You should go by a Firestone store or anywhere they carry them and they will be happy to show one to you.

Edit: Oh, yhea. Noise, no differnt than stock.

Cool! That's exactly what I needed to know. The 950 rates well on TireRack, but I always like to back things up with real world info. Thanks!

one last opinion: i have the Potenza S0-3s, PP, and i love them. they give awesome traction, wet or dry, with loads of grip. and the sidewalls looks great, too.

I bought a set of 235/45-17's about three thousand miles ago and love them. I just got back from a 2000 mile road trip and have no complaints. You can hear a little "tire sizzle" above 30mph on smooth pavement but it is not loud at all aven at 90 or 100mph. The cornering is quick and predictable on dry but I haven't tried the wet cornering. I have driven them in torential downpours though and haven't hydroplaned yet.

$150 each at Tire Rack.

iam running 245/40zr18 RIDGSTONE POTENZA POLE POSITION 3 they do have really good traction but they are heavy tires so they will hurt your performance.I sold my michelins to go with pole 3.Michelin softer pilot sport softer ride with the pole 3 it stiffer which i dont like.Oe on porche and other performance cars.If you want not a stiff ride go with something else but if dont care then go with pole3

Yes I was going to mention the weight of the S03 as well, they are very heavy. The Toyo T1-S on the other hand is the lightest Max Performance tire on the market...

A lot of guys are running S-03's on S2000's when the S-02's from the factory wear out. But I don't get the impression that they have incredible tread life. I guess it depends a lot on how you run them.

So you guys think the Toyo's are the best? Is the weight difference between the S-03's signifigant? I am performance minded, right now I have the Perelli P7000, how do those compare, the Perelli's seem really loud, which ones have better dry traction? Wet traction? Thanks.
