My GLE needs a new starter. I took my car to a Nissan dealership because my Maxima would not start. Nissan said my idle was too slow, so they fastened it up, but now they say that I need a new starter. They want $500 for installation and the new starter. It seems like a lot. Is it worth buying a new starter and me putting it in? If so what kind of starter should I buy? Very dissapointing that the car needs a new starter. Please let me know what you think is best to get the car running and starting smoothly.

If done by a shop the labor charge ought to be one hour. This is a job which can be done by the home mechanic. No need to jack the car, the starter motor is accessed from above.
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the air intake duct and the air cleaner housing assembly.
3. Disconnect the battery cable and the solenoid terminal connection from the starter solenoid.
4. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts and remove the starter from the engine. These bolts may be really tight!

Well, we've seen how good Nissan starters are. I'd rather have a different brand. It's worked perfectly.
