Changing gearing of 5th gear

Has anyone actually done this on their 5 spd?

I find that the 5 spd needs to rev way too high while cruising on the highway. And I am seriously considering this in the near future.

I believe you can change 5th gear fairly easily on the max transmission, however I have no idea where you would get the gear. Perhaps a different nissan car would be able to donate. However, for the amount of fuel you'd be trying to save, it wouldnt be worth your while.

You can change the final drive gear ratio, but it will shorten the gear and make 5th rev even more.

I've already found a source for the 5th gear, I'm just wondering if anyone has already done it.

Actually, I can't find the link for it right now, so if anyone has the link for the site with the 5th gears of varying ratios, that would be greatly appreciated.

maybe buy a quaife, plan on getting the gears cryogenically treated, switch out 5th gear, put in new bearings and reshim the tranny all at once...
THAT would be worth it

So you want a taller 5th gear for less rpm at on the highway. It would almost be alot of trouble to replace it, especially since all 89-01 maximas have the same gear ratios. What you would need is a 5th cog from a 85-88 maxima, its 0.74 ratio would decrease rpm by @ the same speed by 200rpm. So instead of turning 2500rpm @ 60mph it would be 2300 @ 60mph. What I would do is find a spare tranny, take it apart and then test fit the new 5th gear. Or just buy a 85-88 maxima 5spd tranny (it is the same model) and just put the 3.82 final gear inside of it.
