Has anybody had this happen???

Last night me and my friends were racing on the street. We pulled beside a 01' GT and we both motioned and when the light turned green we went at it. Got a good jump and shifted into second hard and was in the lead then heard a lot of clunking. Took it home to see what was going on and the driver side CV joint snapped in half at the shaft like in between the two boots. And this is a rather new CV joint like bought like last year around November or so. I should be able to get it replaced by NAPA but I was wondering if anybody else have broken a CV joint before. I've had CV joint fail pretty recently but this is the first one that has just broken. Just thought I would post to see if anybody else has had this happen or might know what caused this to occur.

Was your recent replacement CV really new? I thought most CV joint replacements were reconditioned/rebuilt units. Sounds like it wasn't tempered properly, and/or it stress-hardened and, snap. I've never had one snap, but then again, I've never had much more HP than stock... Good luck.

Probably has to do with your ACT...I know when I shift into 2nd its the most violent thing I ever feel. I love the clutch, but I wish I could keep those front wheels planted better when I race

you mentioned NAPA? c'mon, why use such a cheap part after investing so much on your car. It's mostly likely be a rebuilt CV joint on a used/reconditioned shaft. ( cleaned, painted to look like new)

May you should invest on thicker CV shafts

But, where would one find a thicker CV shaft or a higher performance CV joint for his Maxima...I've looked and can't find any, obviously I'm looking in the wrong place. The only thing that I don't understand is that there are people running Superchargers and Turbochargers and I haven't heard or don't recall any of them snapping a CV shaft!!! Because I've gone through like 4 CV joints probably in the last year...this is the first one that has snapped though. But, I do agree it being rebuilt probably one of the causes. Any idea what I could do for a thicker CV shaft???.

Sounds to me like you've got bigger issues than the CV joints. You shouldn't be going through that many CV's in that short amount of time. There are cars on the org with major mods (I.E. turbo, superchargers, N.O.S., etc) that aren't seeing that frequency. I can't really think of any good reasons for your predicament though. Is your car drastically lowered? Drastic changes to the angles of suspension parts can cause this type of damage. Have you checked the torque values on the nuts/bolts used on the front suspension? Just suggestions. Let us know what happens, I'm curious.

Figured out what it probably was

Just have lowering springs, and they aren't cut. But, the CV joint problems have been because of tears in the boot and a rock or something gettting in it, and probably dropping the transmission like 4 times in a month didn't help out the driver side CV joint. But, my friend and I were talking about it. And we think we figured out why the CV Joint broke. My friend is rebuilding a Dodge Stealth so decided to put the Dodge stealth rims on the Maxima, just because I haven't had 17s on my car before. These rims are super heavy. I'm guessing maybe about twice the weight of the regular Max rims I have. Anyway...the hard shift into second along with the heavier wheel and slight larger diameter of the wheel probably caused this. So, needless to say I'm going back to the stock wheels again. Just thought I would keep you guys informed. But, the good thing about the win is with the heavier rims and bigger diameter I still beat the Mustang...because I can definitely tell that the car is slower with those heavy rims on.

Re: Figured out what it probably was

I broke a CV joint once, but not on the Maxima. I had replaced the boots and when hammering the joint back onto the shaft, I made a small crack in the metal ring that holds the six ***** ( I think it's called a retainer) on one of the inboard joints. I ignored it and put it back together. And a few weeks later, backing down a curb with the wheel cranked it gave out, the ***** fell out and the inner shaft was just clanking around in there while the transmission was just spinning the rest of the joint. A truly terrible noise, especially when I gunned it. But I knew immediately what broke, so that was some satisfaction.

This is why I like to do my own work on my car.

I wish I knew. Don't have a 1/4 mile track close to me, but the good news is that the city is passing a bill to bring back the 1/4 mile track that got close about 2 years ago...so hopefully it will be opened up in a few months so I can got test it. And I don't have a G-tech to try it out either. But, I know G-tech's aren't that reliable but it would at least give me a ball park.
