How much is weight a factor in racing?

I know it isn't the weekend, but I have a question along with a racing story.

97 Auto Maxima with four people vs. 98+ Acura CL with driver
- I'm not sure what engine he had since the badges were shaved, so it was either the 2.3 or 3.0 (guessing the 2.3).

The CL was lowered with chrome rims and a system, didn't hear an exhaust and never was behind him to see it . I have a Y-pipe and intake for Power mods. At the light he pulled next to me and jumped the light a little. He got part of his car out in front, but then I floored it and caught up to him and passed him right before getting into third gear, then it wasn't even close.

Again he tried, to speed up and shoot by me. But I saw him coming and by the time he pulled next to me I caught up to his speed and started pulling away from him (while my friend laughed at him out the window).

With my added weight in the car, I was surprised I was able to beat him. This is also the reason I don't think he had the 3.0 engine. But how much of a factor does the extra weight come into play? How much more would I have won if it was just myself in the car?

As a rule:

Mass is always the enemy of any measure of automotive performance.

I challenge anyone to come up with a situation where being heavier doesn't degrade performance.
