changing that ATF

ok well, going to the track in a week or so, and i wanted to change my oil, ATF, and do a few minor other things so i could have my car in tip top shape....only thing is im confused about changing the ATF....i would like to switch over synthetic (im slightly under 60k), but current money situation doesnt look like its going to be possibly....so what is the best non-synthetic ATF i should use? and also, should i just drain and refill 4 quarts and flush it when i plan on going synthetic, or flush it now, and then flush it again later when going to synthetic....also, if anyone has any good instructions on DIY, and pictures would be great...thx

I was told once that I could drain my regular ATF and refill with synthetic. Meaning that I would have a blend of regular ATF along with synthetic. Then I could do that same 3k miles later (with oil change). Later again for a third time with the next oil change. By then most of my fuild should be synthetic. Can anyone confirm this?

It takes 4 drain and fills

It takes 4 drain and fills to get over 90% changed. Approximately 4.5 qts comes out of the 10 qt capacity (so 55% of the old fluid remains). 0.55 x 0.55 x 0.55 x 0.55 = 0.0915 ... 9.15% of the old fluid remains after the 4th drain and fill.

Standard disclaimer: Past performance (5 drain and fills on my 99) may not be a reliable indicator of future performance (your Maxima).

What would be more economical? To drain and refill four times, or to have it flushed and filled once? BTW is this safe?

Alright you automagix,
screw the synthetic ATF. I used to work at Summit Racing a long time ago (77-79)If you don't believe call Paul Sergi, he owns Summit Racing. But anyways drain the the stock ATF and refill with the latest TYPE F fluid. Type F has the highest coefficient of friction whereas Dexron types have higher lubricosity factors. My Automax shifts 1-2 like a Turbo 400 (The general makes the best shifting automatics) All of the B&M and Fairbanks ATFs are Ford type fluids with blue dye added instead of red dye. My 442 ran 11s with a Turbo 400 with the AC on. I love my Maxima but they can't hang with a big block intermediate GM for awesome 0-60 smoke those tires holy s**t acceleration. My 442 used to get 10 feet of rubber on the 1-2 shift and a chirp on the 2-3 shift so will of you 5 speed nerds give me a break. A maxima automatic with factory rims is still a lot faster than you think. I have beat several 5 speeds at the track because they had big rims with cheap tires lol whereas i have stock SE alloys with good tires ( Michelin XGT). A Infiniti G35 automatic with a little old lady driving could beat 90% of the 5 speed owners on this site. High horsepower eliminates the manual advantage. Keith

ok...where can i get this fluid, how much does it cost, and also, what method do you recommend of filling...just drain a fill once, or flush it completely?

a lot of people here changed theres 4 times, i only changed it once. i replaced my filter but it was still clean, but then i have owned my max since it was new (it has 115k now) I think the newest F type is called Mercon 4 or something
(can't remember i got it at Wal Mart and did it myself. I cleaned the pan and replaced the pan gasket and filter. My original fluid was still pink at 99k with very little friction material in the pan. My wife drove the car for the first 80k miles so others might have more wear. She's driving our 2001 Yukon - 240 horse Pathfinder couldn't pull my 5000 pound trailer. Tranny shifted the same right after the change, then started shifting much better about 2 weeks after change. Try it. ATF is pretty cheap.

Umm, I don't think it's wise to use Type F in the Maxima. Totally different friction coeficient than Dexron III
