Automatic tranny fluid and filter

I have been given conflicting info about chaning my tranny fluid and filter on my 99 GLE. I've been told that there is no filter to change(the transmission has to be disassembled), and that Dexron III is safe to use instead of Nissanmatic D. I did buy a filter kit from a local auto parts store, but held off on the fluid. What's the straight story here?

No filter, only a screen.

Dexron III fluid + cost increase = Nissan Fluid

In other words, it's the same stuff.
