on for the first couple days of light snow and drove really slow.
This is the same for all dedicated summer tires, the rubber will
get very hard in the cold. They have to be some what warm for them to grip well.
I see you're in MN. I'm guessing your stock tires will give you better (if not much better) control of your Max in the winter. Aren't your winters worse than ours in Toronto in terms of snow accumulation?
To help you answer your question as to which tires you should use for winter, you should consider the following:
- how much snow/slush/ice do tires have to deal with?
- how quickly does snow melt in wintertime?
- if you have to drive through slush, do your tires have the ability to force it out from under the tires?
- if you need to deal with ice, are you tires siped?
Aside: A friend of mine got caught in an unexpected snowfall last yr. with his Toyo T1-S's on his car. He had virtually zero control of his car b/c the tread pattern just isn't suited for safe winter driving. He almost ended up in a curb many times just within that ONE short-distance trip.
Also consider how much money would come out of your pocket to pay for deductible if you mash up your car. I'm sure that amount would be worth at least 50%-60% the value of a set of winter tires.
My $0.02

heh, im from MN. The winters canbe quite cruel, with all the times where some of the snow melts one day, the next day it gets cold and BAM.... Ice everywhere. I pretty sure we get mroe snow here than Toronto, but it depends where you live. I live in the Suburbs of Minneapolis, and we see a few times if 6" or more of snow in 1 day. Thats why I dont plan on getting a bodykit, I also plan on getting good winter tires, hehe.
