IDEAL mileage from a full tank of gas?

not sure how many gallons our car holds, i thought 16 but someone told me 18.5?
if 16, i get 17.5 miles per gallon

if 18.5, i get 16.7? miles per gallon

either way something is wrong, very low numbers and this is though city driving and shifting at 3k rpm TOPS, very peaceful/careful driving....
ok mecca, if you ran ur car empty, you'd be pushing your car into the gas station, so that can't be right, next time when you fill up at 290 miles, check the pump to see how many gallons you filled and then post here with the # and then you can calculate it to the exact number, i 100% gaurantee you that your not filling 18.5 gallons or even 16 gallons each time

ok, exxon just robbed me, i filled up 15.6 gallons. I normally fill up between 14-16, never 18.

. I dont know how much miles i will get but i am at the second dash, the one after the Full line and i'm at 106 miles...i have been driving kind of hard though....

I can only draw one conclusion,
The "city" driving in NYC is far worse than city driving in most of the country except for a few large cities like NYC but other than that, you can't call our "city" driving the same as the "city" driving in some suburban town. Our highway driving is probably worse than their city driving and has more traffic and requires more stop and go driving...
From who I've talked to locally, everyone gets similar milage.. so i wouldn't worry about it being something wrong with the car..

Yeah i'm in NYC and our "city" driving is really really bad most of the time. even when there's "minimal" traffic, it's still a constant stop and go routine. I probably average anywhere between 230-270/full tank down to the fuel light. I almost never get the rpms past 3k, have 80k miles, and i use only Mobil's Super unleaded. any ideas how to raise my mpg?

I was finally able to calculate my MPG.
In dead set stop and go traffic, I'm so far getting about 18MPG
I was hoping to get at least into the 20's especially now that I'm using 94 octane. Hopefully these numbers will increase gradually..

don't forget that proper tire air pressure affects you mpg too!!!!!!!
i get avg 19 mpg 50% mix city/hw
i won't say i have a lead foot but let's just say i pass people and don't often get passed.

My record is 29.7mpg... automatic 2000 Maxima ~33k miles, and a full-tank ride on I-80 west into PA. (which REALL REALLY surprised me, because the terrain is hilly, and I was cruising at ~80-90mph the entire way... very very very far from optimal!!!).
I still have the gas receipt and mileage since full somewhere to prove it!
-Tom
PS. I usually average between 26 and 28 mpg highway.

OK, i'm ****ed...I told you guys, I have a '97 GLE with around 85k miles on it. I was getting around 210-240(when i'm lucky) miles per tank! I didn't do the exact measuring method which i'm gonan do next but i;m ****ed because I just got a tune-up about 3 weeks-1 month ago and I got a new air filter AND NGK Platinums put in. The car definitely felt a lot smoother but the mileage didn't get better one bit. I think i'm going to change my Knock Sensor, is this ok even if I don't have any Check Engine light coming on? I've bene reading around and some people say the new KS improved their mileage. I'm getting desperate, wasting so much money on gas, sdo you guys think it'll help?

320 for me too. I'm manual and I get 320 and lately I've pulled out 340 miles on my fill-ups because i'm more confident about how many gallons I have left cause I know how to calculate it. Which brings me to my next thought. I don't think everyone is calculating their mileage correctly. People keep asking about fuel tank capacity. I know it's 18.5 gallons for 97-99 and I just assumed it was for 95 and 96 too. But why do they keep asking for this value? They don't need it if they're calculating their mileage correctly. All they have to do is fill the car up, zero the trip odometer, drive for a little while or until they're too scared to drive any more without getting gas, go to the gas station, fill up again, note the gallons pumped to fill the tank again, note the miles travelled since last fill-up, divide that number by the number of gallons needed to fill up, and voila, you've got your gas mileage. So is everyone doing that?

Hmm... are you getting gas at the same station?
-Tom
ok, i just did the accurate measuring thing, with measuring the miles travelled and the gallons to fill-up, turns out I got 50.5 miles from 2.55 gallons. That comes out to around 19.8mpg. TO get my full tank estimate, would I multiply that by 16.5 or 18.5?
I used to get about 250 on a full tank, then I added some performance parts, let off the heavy foot a bit and now get about 280-300 by the time im down to 1/4 tank left. I still get on the gas every once in a while, doesn't seem to make a difference though.

haha no problem, just make sure u have the number of miles and the gallons u filled up!

Here's a link to the edmunds.com site with the specs on the 97 max: Nissan specs at edmunds.com. But for the sake of other people, and as zealotnyc showed, you don't really need the fuel tank capacity to see what kind of gas mileage you're getting. One thing though, zealot, unless you can drive the whole range of your driving style within 50.5 miles, you may want to go 2- or 300 miles to get a more accurate calculation.
i'm gonna clean my throttle body before the trip tomorrow...first tiem opening up my car myelf, wish me luck! let me clear up one thing...after i disconnect the MAF and the air filter, when I spray the cleaner in teh tthrottle body, should the enging be on or not?

This is something that I've wanted to do for a while but I'm chicken. How long does it take you? I see those cables and stuff and I'm wondering what happens if a spring or something pops out or something. I'd hate to screw up something. Is it hard to screw up? How involved is it? Are the instructions in Haynes detailed enough for what you will encounter?
I normally get close to 400 miles on each fillup. Today I drove my car until the idiot light came on (407 miles) and I filled up. I had to put 17.2 gallons in. I know the specs state that the 95-96 have a 18.5 gallon gas tank. I have a 5 speed and I do occasionally gun it. The only mod I have is a HKS intake and that improved my gas mileage. I have gone over 500 miles when I am on the highway if I use the cruise control and cruise no higher than 75 mph.

I just printed out these directions here http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/517
and got to work.
It was really easy, I have some helpful hints though, the air filter in the pic is diff. from stock, so if you have stock, you're gonan only end up taking off the top half of the air filter box thing. It's real easy to spot, it's held down by 3 or 4 clasps. And the thing the guy talks abotu disconnecting in the first step, its the little wire chip conncector thingy attached to the square black box.
To loosen the round metal bracelet type things on the hoses, use a plier type of wrench and squeeze the two ends together to get it to open up a bit, it's hard to do it with just hands.
Once you get everything off, the dirty part is actually inside the chamber area, so you need to push down the little lever next to the TB, that's the throttle, so the chamber opens up, spray inside and wipe down, repeatedly, and don't forget to wipe the opposite side of the butterfly plate, the side you can't see, i almost missed that part completely today. Go as deep as you can go with the rag.
once your done cleaning, put everything back in place, don't forget the little tiny black tube.
your car should be hard to start the first few tries, but it'll catch and then let it run for like 5 minutes, should be smooth as a baby.
i also noticed that my car seems to coast a lot better, like if i go 40mph, and let go of the pedal, the car will go a lot further withouth slowing down.
